Senate Bill SB2602, HD1 (PDF), has passed through final committee review in the Hawaii State legislature and will go to Governor Lingle for her signature. In a previous conversation between Governor Lingle and the Hawaii Association of REALTORS (HAR), Governor Lingle indicated that she would support the bill. This is a proactive bill supported and lobbied for by HAR Government Affairs Committee with the support of the Hawaii Real Estate Commission.
What this means to all licensees in Hawaii is that next year, they will have to schedule more time for education. Most states have much more difficult re-licensing requirements than Hawaii. As President of HAR, I see all different levels of competency across our state in the real estate practice. This step is very positive in that it requires all agents to increase their skills in areas that really count for the consumer. Consumers will be able to have greater confidence that their agent has taken core skill courses in ethics, changes in state and federal laws, agency law and other key areas that affect the Hawaii Real Estate industry.
The bill still awaits Governor Lingle’s signature, but her record on consumer protection issues clearly follows that she will likely sign the bill in to law. We look forward to higher standards and consumer protection in our industry.

Tracy, thanks for standing for the education of Hawaii’s Realtors. This is a huge accomplishment. I know I sound like a broken record when I say “It’s not just the market that’s changing, it’s the entire industry”, but it’s true. The low barrier-to-entry and the lack of compulsory education is a dangerous combination for Realtors.
Increasing the requirements for Continuing Education is past due. We’re honored to have you in leadership, and standing for what’s needed. Big Mahalo for your work on this.
