Hawaii Military Life: Popular O’ahu Military Communities – Ewa Beach

Few places on Oahu have a combination of affordable housing, family-oriented urban planning, and newer real estate than Ewa Beach on the island of Oahu, Hawai’i. From old Hawaii plantation homes, townhouses, and single-family homes, Ewa Beach has it all. Able to maintain its charm through thoughtful design and development, this quiet city on the West side of Oahu is perfect for PCS’ing military families. Notably, Ewa Beach hosts some of the highest concentrations of homes purchase via VA home loans on island.

Formerly sugarcane fields located between Joint Base Pearl Harbor Naval Magazine and Barber’s Point Coast Guard Air Station. Ewa Beach has transformed from agricultural center to a suburban residential city that nicely blends Hawaii of old and new.

Today, Ewa Beach hosts a large number of newer homes built by popular developers such as D.R. Horton, Haseko, and Gentry. All three builders have invested heavily into making Ewa Beach a premier affordable residential suburban area perfect for middle class families. Each development community has been meticulously planned with thousands of well-planned homes in organized communities that cater to families with young kids and pets.

Commute Times to Duty Stations

When it comes to commuting to duty stations from Ewa Beach times vary.

  • Coast Guardsmen stationed at Barber’s Point can expect the quickest commutes of around 10-15 minutes.
  • The Army’s Schofield Barracks and NSA tunnel can expect 35-minute commutes or less. Those going to Fort Shafter and Tripler Army Medical Center can experience 40-50 minute commute.
  • Navy and Air Force have the longest commutes at 45 minutes-1 hour going to and from Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.

Recently expanded freeway lanes have helped ease traffic. An elevated rail system is currently under development as well and will pass through North Ewa Beach ending at Ala Moana mall in Honolulu with total ride times at approximately 43 minutes.

Local Business

Considering restaurants and stores, Ewa beach has many corporations familiar to mainland and military customers. Safeway, Ross, Petco, Buffalo Wild Wings, IHOP, Longs, McDonald’s, and Burger King are all in town.

Medical

Queens Medical Center courtly expanded to Ewa Beach. It’s ranked one of the best hospitals on Oahu. Queens West Oahu is set to double its size to provide better care to the West Oahu Community.

Schools

According to greatschools.org

Iroquois Point Elementary, Ewa Beach Elementary, Holomua Elementary, and Ewa Makai Middle School feature ratings of 7 at Above Average.

Pohakea Elementary, Ilima Intermediate, Jame Campbell High feature ratings of 6 at Average.
As Ewa Beach continues to gentrify these schools are improving.
