Moving To Hawaii

Hawaii #1 in Migration!

Are you thinking about moving to Hawaii? If you are, you are not alone. Hawaii may be one of the smallest states in the country, but the surge of interest to move here is huge!

According to a recent report from moveBuddha.com, there’s been a surge of interest in moving to Hawaii. In fact, more so than in any other state.

You may not be that surprised. After all, if you are contemplating a move to the Aloha State, it’s probably because you are drawn to our warm weather, our beautiful beaches, and our island culture. People move to Hawaii for a lot of reasons, but whether it’s because of beach-life culture or remote work initiatives, it’s clear that there is something about our islands that is catching the interest of movers.

Are Moves Really Headed to Hawaii?

  • Since 2020, interest in moving to Hawaii from other U.S. states has surged +148%.
  • That’s from a flat 102-to-100 move in-to-out ratio in 2020 up to 252-to-100 in 2022.
  • Proportionally, Hawaii is seeing the highest ratio of moves into the state. At the same time, not many are looking to move out.

Who is Moving and Where Are They Going?

California is fueling nearly half of the interest in moving in (47%). No real surprise there. Californians have always had an affinity for Hawaii. Movers from Texas, Florida, Washington, and Oregon were also in the rankings. Hilo and Kamuela are the top cities by in-to-out ratio, with the highest proportions of inflow headed to these Big Island faves. That being said, we see our fair share of mainlanders moving to Oahu. Neighborhoods like Kailua and Hawaii Kai have been popular for years with many mainland buyers. In fact, Kailua ranked #4 on the list of most popular cities to move to.

Migration to Hawaii is nothing new. People have always come to this special place. And, for lots of reasons. Whatever your reasons — the near perfect weather, the diversity of our people and culture, or for work-life balance, the report makes one thing clear. Hawaii has not lost its appeal!
