Happy Hour Favorites on O‘ahu’s North Shore

If you find yourself ravenous after a day of splashing or surfing on O‘ahu’s spectacular North Shore, our resident Hawai‘i Life agents have a few favorites eateries to recommend. These local restaurants will satiate your hunger with delicious fare and quench your thirst with some delicious bevvies!

Did we spell that right? Is it bevy? In any case, we’re hungry, so let’s get to enjoying some pau hana grinds, shall we?

The Point Sunset & Pool Bar

A trip to the North Shore begins and ends here. If you live up in this surfers’ paradise, you know that watching surfers catch waves in Turtle Bay as you sip a delicious cocktail is a great way to unwind as the sun goes down. The craft cocktails are delicious, the food is what the resort describes as “farm-to-pool”, and it’s sourced from local farms and served up fresh and delicious. And of course, there’s the spectacular view. You can almost touch the surf break. Best of all, there’s nightly entertainment, including a fire knife performance poolside on Sunday evenings. Some of the staff have worked here for decades and we reckon it’s because their “office” is one of the most beautiful spots in the world.

Uncle Bo’s Pupu Bar & Grill

Central to everything that Haleiwa has to offer—shopping, art galleries, and beaches — a stop for lunch, happy hour or dinner at this North Shore hot spot is a must! It’s the second location for this popular restaurant, whose original restaurant has been brightening up the dining scene on Kapahulu Ave. in Kaimuki for years.

There’s lots of draft beer to choose from and a mouth-watering BLT with avocado that we dream about when we are away from home. The bright airy space, with a long bar in the center of it, and lots of cozy tables, creates a casual and relaxing vibe. It feels a bit like an urban bistro—but it’s the chilled out atmosphere, combined with the friendly local bar staff, that makes Uncle Bo’s a must-stop place for pau hana drinks and bites.

Roy’s Beach House

Master chef Roy Yamaguchi is considered one of the founding fathers of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Owner of several enormously successful restaurant brands across the state, this outpost tucked away next to Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore delivers the same focus on the freshest farm-to-table ingredients. You’ll also find as Yamaguchi’s signature creative flair in blending Pacific Rim and European flavors.

Overlooking the exquisite Kuilima Cove behind the resort, you can get your toes in the sand while nibbling on “bar bites” from 3-5 p.m. daily. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and you may feel so relaxed at pau hana that’ll you’ll want to stay for dinner. Don’t miss Roy’s delicious Szechuan baby back pork ribs. For veggie lovers, there’s crispy Brussels sprouts with cauliflower, lime juice, yogurt, almonds and honey.

Banzai Sushi Bar

One of the top sushi and sashimi hot spots on the North Shore, chef Hide Takahashi’s happy hour specials are simply delish. With a wide range of lite bites in the $6-$7 range, plus beer and cocktail specials, this is a great spot to get your sushi on. Don’t miss their Banzai Makimono – a spicy tuna, avocado and cucumber roll done tempura-style with a ponzu dipping sauce for just $7.  Their saketinis — sake based martinis in lychee, raspberry and Fuji apple flavors — are our favorite! Banzai is tucked into the back section of North Shore Marketplace.

Lei Lei’s

Overlooking the links at Turtle Bay Resort, this 19th hole is the perfect place to wrap up a game of golf, or any other North Shore day.  Known for the seafood that graces their menu, this is a great spot for oysters, ahi poke, crab dip and panko-crusted calamari to pair with your pau hana tropical cocktails. We love the Lei Lei’s lemonade, made with vodka, Chambord and fresh lemonade.  It’s a great way to cool off and unwind after a day in the surf and sun. After happy hour, check out Surfer [THE BAR] inside the Turtle Bay Resort lobby for some live music – it opens at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays through Saturdays.
