Fall in Maui

Having been born and raised in New York, I grew up enjoying the changing seasons. Fall was always fun as school started after Labor Day, and the air gets less humid and more crisp. Although I grew up in the city, I still enjoyed the changing colors of the trees, when NY seems to look like a watercolor painting.

It took some time to get used to the fact that on Maui the hottest time of the year is August and September. School starts in July and August (depending on the school), and well, nothing else really changes! It’s funny to start seeing pumpkin spice everything when it just feels like one endless summer.

Kids Change Everything

But then I had children—all of a sudden, I had to seek out “Fall” for the experience of it. And then just like that, I realized that Maui has an amazing fall season after all.

Kula Country Farms opens it’s pumpkin patch every year on October 1st. I will go on record saying that this is the prettiest pumpkin patch in the world. It has bi-coastal ocean views, with the West Maui mountains in the distance. The pumpkins are “grown here, not flown here.” Over the years, the farm offers more and more activities, like a corn maze! The cooler Kula temperatures give just enough of a fall feeling that Maui residents are looking for.

A New Family Favorite in Haiku

A new favorite for my family is something called the “Myths of Avalon – Enchanted Farm Tour” in Haiku. It is hard to explain exactly what it is, so I took the following from their Facebook page; “Venture into the Enchanted Forest on a guided farm tour. Hear stories about the Menehune and legends of old Hawaii. Meet magical creatures and collect natural treasures. Journey into a world of fantasy and history.” The Myths of Avalon takes place at Awalau Farm in Haiku. My kids love collecting crystals, shells, and seeing mermaids and unicorns. It is so unique and utilizes the beautiful properties of Haiku’s tropical rainforest.

COVID-19 Changes Everything

In the past, there is also tons of festivals and farmers markets with beautiful fruits and vegetables and activities for the kids. “Made on Maui County Festival” features local food and craft vendors. This is the largest products show in Maui County hosted by Hawaiian Airlines. It is such a great way to see all of the amazing talents that Hawaii people have to offer! As you can imagine, this year, this festival, along with most others, has been postponed due to COVID-19.

You Can Now Come to Maui in the Fall

So Maui has an amazing fall experience, after all. It is also a great time to travel here, as it is a bit less crowded, and nightly rates tend to be a little lower. Or better yet, maybe it’s time to move here! As of October 15, 2020, visitors can come to our beautiful islands with a negative COVID-19 test (within 72 hours of flying). Love Life, Live Maui!
