Have you ever wondered if there are any good places to hike in Ewa Beach? The answer is YES. Most people who live and work in the Ewa area know the beaches are close but not many know there is a nature trail. Hidden in the heart of the Hoakalei communities is the Haseko lagoon. This is the spot of the much anticipated new commercial project that has been in the works for years. With the recent opening of the new Hoakalei Country Club member clubhouse, the projects seem closer than ever.
Oneula Beach Park
Directly behind the lagoon is a great nature trail that connects the two local beaches. The nature trail is directly in the middle of Oneula Beach Park better known as “Hau Bush” and White Plains Beach. The White Plains Beach is located between Ewa Beach and the neighboring Kapolei and offers some surf breaks almost year round. Now, this is not without some controversy as Oneula Beach Park has been widely known for beach camping by the homeless. Over the last several years a huge push has been happening to help clean up the area and regulate the camping to permit only. There are almost weekly beach cleanups happening to help make it as beautiful as it once was. You can see the progress and the views are amazing straight to Diamond Head.
The rocky shoreline is rideable by bike in some spots and other areas the deep sand makes walking a necessity. The path can be walked from one beach to another and is roughly about a mile. To one side you have the beautiful Pacific Ocean and the other you see the mountains beyond the lagoon areas. You are sure to see a sea turtle swimming or eating off the beach. This is also a well-known area for the Hawaiian monk seals.
There are always people laying at the beaches, fishing, or occasionally camping for the weekend. My family and I often enjoy this trail and always welcome the beautiful surroundings and sunsets from this hike. This is a great area to call home with amazing trails and beaches.
