Duke Kahanamoku’s Oahu Estate Has Been Put on the Market

The home of Hawaiian and surfing icon Duke Kahanamoku has just come on the market here in Honolulu. The home site, according to local lore, was chosen for Duke by his good friend, the heiress Doris Duke, whose Estate Shangri La is just up the coast. No doubt as to why the site was chosen.

Noteworthy Features

With commanding views of the ocean and Koko Head, the house sits at the top of a sloping lot. The bottom of the lot opens to a private beach park shared by the neighbors with easy access to the water for surfers, paddlers, or swimmers.

The original home was built in 1937, and enjoyed by Duke and his wife Nadine. The new owner did a major remodel in 2002, incorporating some of the original home including an original wooden staircase and a cement plaque with Duke’s handprints just off the lanai. The additions are stylish and take advantage of the amazing view.

The owner is a famed designer himself and it shows. It is an intimate, thoughtful home with great style and attention to detail. The floor plan allows for entertaining but also for privacy. Each of the three main suites have their own sitting rooms. Smart, as anyone who owns this home can expect frequent guest who don’t want to leave. All three sitting rooms have ocean views, luxurious baths, and spacious bedrooms. A fourth bedroom or bonus room is over the garage.

The great room opens to an ocean view lanai with an infinity pool, with Duke’s handprint plaque nestled in the lawn. To get to the ocean, there is a flight of lava rock stairs to the lower portion of the property and the beach park. There is an easy place to drop in a paddleboard or canoe. It is hard to believe you are only a few minutes from Waikiki and urban Honolulu. This spot feels more like the North Shore or even one of the outer islands. It’s not hard to imagine Duke himself pushing out here.

Curious how much would be the property tax, or utilities, or maintenance ?

Hi Douglas, This home sold last month and I don’t have the figures for maintenance or utilities. Taxes are based upon assessed value and whether its your primary residence or not. This was a Second home so it was taxed at a higher rate. Ill send you an email with more details.
