Clarkin Ossipoff House – A Secluded Waterfront Estate

Once again, the vision of one architect from 50 years ago, Vladimir Ossipoff, still defines Hawaii Modern, Hawaii Luxury, Hawaii Life. I was fortunate to be able to tour an Ossipoff estate situated between Paiko Lagoon and the freshwater Kanewai Spring-fed Kanewai Fishpond (one of the last remaining freshwater springs in Honolulu).

What Makes This Home So Appealing?

It is the last house on this peninsula situated between spring and sea, and as such is surrounded on three sides by water. Supposedly the original owner made a comment to the effect that “when Ossipoff built my house, he visited my place everyday for almost one month and felt the wind. Then he made (designed) every room to feel the wind and to be able to see the water.”

There’s been some remodeling over the years, some choices made that might have not been quite in line with what Vladimir would’ve wanted, but the bones are there, the feel is there, the wind and the views are all there.

With a few tweaks here and there, this property could end up as one of Hawaii’s most desirable homes

There are also many original features, including vast amounts of coral used throughout the home, impossible to recreate these days. This is a magical site and a truly lovely home that, with a few tweaks here and there, could end up as one of Hawaii’s most desirable homes.

At almost 8,000 sq ft of interior space and well over an acre of land, this home presents itself as both a high-end resort in feel and scope, and also, due to the skill of the architect, a livable single-family home, albeit one on the larger end of the scale.

Indeed, though many homes currently being built at this price point are quite a bit larger than this home is, as much as two or three times this size, it is that very fact that makes this home so appealing. Sure, the $20 million-plus buyer has a primary home of vast proportion, 18, 20, 30 thousand square feet, but whereas that size serves them well as a primary house, the somewhat smaller scale of this home still lends an air of spaciousness and expanse necessary, without the additional upkeep needed for a home that is in use for only a fraction of the year. It’s really the best of all worlds: appropriate scale without the extra burdens.
