Big Island

Big Island Real Estate with Waterfalls

One of the most spectacular features of “Water Falling,” the Hamakua Coast estate sold at auction in 2014 for $5,750,000 and then sold again in January 2016 for $6.8 million, was its setting on an oceanfront cliff alongside the dramatic waterfall from which it took its name. Whatever the price point, properties for sale with waterfalls on Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island attract special interest due to their romance and purported therapeutic qualities.

Since then I’ve happened to list several properties with waterfalls. I am a huge fan myself (I once got married beneath a waterfall in Central Park!) so here is a Houzz.com Ideabook type of post about Big Island real estate listings featuring waterfalls.

Big Island Homes with Natural Waterfalls

The deep valleys, high cliffs, and abundant rainfall of the Hamakua Coast on the north side of the Big Island create perfect conditions for dramatic, high waterfalls. One of the most often performed slack key songs, Hi’ilawe, celebrates that high waterfall of Waipio Valley.

Waterfalls on or near property you might purchase will be less grand, but still fine for a swimming hole or simply to enjoy the sound.

Here’s one at the lower end of the price range, a 17-acre agricultural property with orchards in place and a small home, adjacent to a waterfall, for $799,000 (MLS# 290962).

This Honomu waterfall comes with 17 acres, orchards, and an upscale small home, asking $799,000

Dry side Waimea, just minutes from the sunny Kohala Coast resorts, seems like an unlikely place to find a stream-side natural swimming hole and waterfall. But that’s exactly what my Kanehoa subdivision listing has…and a 5-bedroom home perfectly sited to enjoy the waterfall, ocean horizon, and mountain views. Listed for $1,895,000 (MLS# 288712).

Large Acreage with Five Waterfalls

If you prefer North Kohala, my 485-acre listing has five waterfalls on the property. The sellers have pet names for them and at one point thought of putting an eco-tourism cottage next to each waterfall. Two of them are pictured right in the listing (MLS# 263044). Here’s another one I’ve yet to hike in to:

Waterfalls You Switch On

Now that I’m “collecting” waterfalls, I’m finding them everywhere. In landscaping, pool design, even interiors. They are particularly welcome on the dry side of the Big Island where the use of waterfalls and lava rock in combination brings a “Big Island” sensibility to resort-style architecture.

For example, on the Kohala Ranch caravan we had this new listing, a 3-bedroom home in the Heathers, with a lovely waterfall swimming pool. Asking $1,400,000 (MLS# 289070)

My new listing of an equestrian estate at Puakea Bay Ranch has a waterfall between the main house and the guest house. Asking $3,495,000 for 5 bedrooms, 40 acres, swimming pool, and horse barns and facilities (MLS# 28933).
