AccesSurf: A Hawaii Nonprofit Providing an Ocean of Possibilities

In 2006, Mark Marble founded a nonprofit organization called AccesSurf. This amazing NPO provides families with disabilities a day at the beach in a safe, caring, and non-threatening environment. This is a fabulous free program that utilizes specially-made surfboards, wave skis, and floatation devices for those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

When the program first started there were approximately 6 volunteers and 4 participants. This incredible organization has now grown to 70 – 95 participating families, with up to 100 volunteers every month to assist families with special needs and provide them “an ocean of possibilities,” and feel the freedom that surfing and being in the ocean brings.

AccesSurf provides a day at the beach every month with trained volunteers. There are surfers, doctors, therapists, lifeguards, and so many other caring volunteers that donate their time, smiles, hearts, and passion for the ocean.

In September 2015, AccesSurf was part of history when they proudly participated in the very first ISA (International Surfing Association) Adaptive Surfing World Championships in La Jolla, California. There were 18 nations represented with 80 adaptive surfers competing.

They also have a free special program for Wounded Warriors. This program provides adaptive ocean recreation for any of our military men and women with disabilities. This program is not for just physical disabilities, it also includes interactive social skills, behavioral problems, and of course, the positive physical effects of outdoor exercise. The Wounded Warrior day at the beach is the third Wednesday of each month.

Want to Get Involved?

AccesSurf is currently only available on Oahu. However, one of their many goals is to become a statewide NPO. To read more or become involved with this incredible NPO, please visit the AccesSurf website.

I’m proudly one of the sponsors of AccesSurf. If you select me to help you buy or sell real estate in Hawaii, and wish to support them, I will donate 10% of my commissions to AccesSurf at the close of your transaction.
