A Look at What’s for Sale in Upcountry Maui for Horses
Where are the estates for horses on Maui? For many people in Hawaii, or those looking to move to Maui, horses and large acreage are a priority. Hawaii has a huge horse culture since the early Paniolo Days. The first horse arrived as a gift to King Kamhehameha in 1803, landing Kawaihae on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Horses, equestrian culture and ranching have played a major role in Hawaii for generations ever since. Upcountry Maui is home to the historical major ranches of Haleakala Ranch, Ka’ono’ulu Ranch, Kaupo Ranch and ‘Ulupalakua Ranch along with remnants of the Von Tempsky Ranch. In addition, Oprah Winfrey has been acquiring large parcels for her OW Ranch in Keokea and Ulupalakua.
There are many other smaller ranches that we may touch in other matters. I don’t want to miss any of my rancher friends so just know that we had Piiholo Ranch, Diamond B, Sakugawa, Thompson Ranch, etc. Many of these ranches are also able to lease lands from private parties as well as government lands. Therefore, Upcountry Maui has been able to retain Tens of Thousands of acres in open space, allowing for our beautiful vistas of emerald pastures on the slopes of the Haleakala scattered with cattle, sheep, goats and our beloved horses.
With that, what properties are available for purchase in Upcounty Maui for those of us that want our animals on our own Estate properties??
Maui’s Largest Land Sale in 2022
After selling Maui’s largest Upcountry ranch property in 2022 and another 26 lots of a smaller ranch parcels this year, I have been blessed with selling more acreage Upcountry than any other for the year, totaling well over 1000 acres in Upcountry Maui in the last few years. I have many owners reaching out to me to help with their marketing. Many of these are not on the market yet, but we have many more properties. If what you want is not here now, always feel free to contact me with what you are looking for. 😊 I know the property that will fit your needs.
#10 sale in Hawaii per Pacific Business News. #1 on Maui for Land Sales.
Let’s start with my favorite ones that are on the market now.
A Few Upcountry Properties Active Now Over 10 Acres
151 Kula I’o Road is a great lot with a 7 acre building envelope on a 15 acre property in the gated community of Kula I’o. Equestrian buildings are not limited to the 7 acre envelope so this allows an estate to have their main home and farm dwelling cottage of up to 1000 square feet, amenities within the 7 acres. This leaves ample room for arena areas, shelter, multiple paddocks, etc. Did I mention the amazing views of South Maui, West Maui Mountains, Lana’i, year round sunsets, Molokini and Kaho’olawe?? See my blog post on this lot here as well.
Pe’ahi Farms in Haiku offers a unique farm experience as it sits on the oceanfront bluffs of the North Shore. It is a beautiful, rugged area near the Pe’ahi Surf Break known as “Jaws.” Additionally, this open space subdivision allows for unique in area riding around the larger interior agricultural lots. There are a few available units. Lot 9 MLS 397620 is a 13+ acre lot facing East with significant ocean frontage. A unique “surf and turf” property for your peaceful enjoyment while being 15 minutes from amenities of Paia and Haiku restaurants, groceries, etc.
Another horse estate potential property is at 788 Middle Road in Kula. In addition to great views, pasture, this lot offers a very unique multiple parcel opportunity. Combined, the property totals 18+ acres with 3 Tax Map Keys (TMK) or parcels of agricultural land in Keokea of Upcountry Maui. 2 Parcels are still waiting on their own meters on the Upcountry Water Meter List See blog here for full list. The property includes a quaint cottage overlooking Maui’s South Shore. Great location that has been grazed with goats and horses.
