A Fall Tradition With a View: The Pumpkin Patch at Kula Country Farms

Well, I guess it’s that time of the year again! The annual trek up the pumpkin patch.

There’s something about October on Maui that pulls everyone Upcountry. The air gets a little cooler on the drive up Kula Highway, the jacarandas and eucalyptus line the road, and before you know it you’re standing in a field of orange with the whole central valley stretched out below you. For a lot of us here, a visit to Kula Country Farms is as much a part of fall as Halloween itself.

Grown Right Here on Maui

One of my favorite things about this patch is that it’s the real deal. A sign posted right by the field says it plainly: 100% of their pumpkins are grown on the farm. In a place where so much of what we buy comes in on a container ship, it’s a treat to pick something that grew right where you’re standing.

You’ll find everything from tiny decorative gourds to big carving pumpkins, plus white and pale yellow varieties if you want something a little different for the front porch.

What to Expect When You Go

This isn’t a quick in-and-out stop. Plan to spend a little time and take it all in:

The pumpkin field: Rows of pumpkins laid out across the hillside, with plenty of room to wander and pick your favorite.

The views: On a clear day you can see across the isthmus to the West Maui Mountains. Bring your phone fully charged.

Photo spots: The pumpkin display under the big tree is the go-to family photo backdrop. Get there early if you want it without a line.

The keiki favorites: The corn maze, farm animals, and this year even some big CAT equipment on display (look, but no climbing!).

Local vendors: Food and craft tents set up near the field, so you can grab a snack and do a little shopping.

A Few Tips from Someone Who’s Made the Trek

Go early. Weekends fill up fast, especially the last two before Halloween.

Dress in layers. It can be sunny and warm one minute and cool and breezy the next up in Kula.

Bring a wagon. If you’re planning on more than one big pumpkin, your arms will thank you.

Check before you go. Hours and event details can change from year to year, so take a look at Kula Country Farms’ website or social media pages for the latest.

Why I Love Upcountry This Time of Year

After more than 20 years in Maui real estate, I still get asked what life is like in different parts of the island. Days like this are a big part of the answer for Upcountry. It’s the farms, the slower pace, the cooler evenings, and traditions like this one that bring the whole community together every fall.

If you’re curious about Kula or anywhere else on Maui, whether you’re just starting to look around or simply want to know what’s happening in the market, I’m always happy to talk story. No pressure, just good info.

In the meantime, go pick your pumpkin and enjoy the view. Happy Halloween!
