Tadashi Sato Residence
Welcome to 1600 Kuuipo Street, Lahaina – a rare surviving example of 1960s artistry borne out of the heart of accomplished and noted Hawaiian-born artist Tadashi Sato. What a joy to live on a planet whose inhabitatants include artists and creators and people with vision. Among Sato’s more renowned pieces is “Aquarius” – a glass mosaic work that graces the Hawaii State Capitol Building in Honolulu. Leftover material from that project now lives in the terraced stone wall here in the garden.
Rectangular Forms Surround an Inner Sanctum
I think it’s especially fascinating when a visual artist turns his hand to architecture. Such is the case here at 1600 Kuuipo Street in Lahaina. The house is a collection of rectangular forms cleverly oriented to an inner sanctum of terraced garden walls. Most of the front of the house shades out the relentless Lahaina sun.
The scale of the house is both elegant and cozy, reserving the highest ceiling for the main living room and allowing the bedroom areas to be a tighter more private scale. Sato designed this house for his family in the mid 1960s. (The plans were stamped one month before my exit from my mother’s womb.) I had fun putting together this video tour of the house with some 1960s era kitschy music. Enjoy!
