Farm Property on the Big Island – Better Than Fame or Fortune

A year ago, I helped clients purchase a 40+ acre parcel with a small Balinese-style home on the Hamakua Coast. We’d started out looking at a residence in the Hawi area then listed for $1.3 million. The property they purchased had a similar asking price, but we were able to steal it for much less due to an unusual set of circumstances.

One of their neighbors has taken a similar property from a completely overgrown mess (these clients sent me a machete for a closing gift!) to a pretty luxurious farm, and you can now see a tour of that property on the Oprah website.

Maybe you don’t want to live next door to “Roseanne Barr’s nut farm,” in which case I’d be happy to show you agriculturally prime real estate for sale in my home territory of North Kohala.

Any of the vacant land parcels, or homes that were described in my recent blog post on gulches would be ideal for farming. Mere mortals do not need 40 acres to tend to a small orchard and keep a few goats. In tropical Hawai’i, even two acres would be plenty for most of us, and even upscale neighborhoods like Maliu Ridge near Hawi are zoned agricultural to permit those uses.

Another area with a rich agricultural history is just west and makai (towards the ocean) from Hawi town, along Hoea Rd (easy to find because of the “Welcome to Historic Kohala” sign on the rock wall). Some of the existing farmers down this way bring their produce to the farmer’s market under the banyan tree and supply our local supermarket, Takata Store.

One of my current listings in the Hoea area that was the main subject of another recent post, has modest CC&Rs that require all farming to be organic. And the seller just happens to be friends with a certain celebrity Big Island farm owner who told a national audience this lifestyle is even better than fame and fortune…
