The Healing Side of the Ocean

Living on Kauai, the ocean seamlessly integrates into my daily routine, whether I intend it or not. The tides, the wind, the surf, and the weather all naturally slow me down and compel me to step outside. Over time, I’ve come to realize that the ocean offers more than just recreational activities; it serves as a therapeutic outlet for many of us.

There’s an inherent calming effect in getting into the water that resets my mind. Some mornings, I choose to surf, while other days, I opt for a simple swim or a few minutes of floating in the water after a stressful day. Regardless of the activity, I always leave feeling mentally lighter. The ocean possesses a unique ability to quiet the cacophony of thoughts in my head. Stress, anxiety, overthinking, and pressure all seem to dissipate once I’m immersed in its embrace.

I believe a significant factor contributing to this is the concept of presence. When I’m surfing, I can’t help but focus on the horizon, feel the wind, time the waves, and fully engage in the present moment. Even simply sitting in the lineup, waiting for a set, can evoke a meditative state. The ocean demands that I slow down and breathe deeply.

For mental well-being, this practice holds immense power.

Routine also plays a crucial role. Establishing simple routines connected to the ocean can have a profound impact on the energy of my day. Dawn patrol surf checks, beach walks, evening swims, and watching sunsets after work are just a few examples of these small habits that create balance and consistency, particularly during challenging times in life.

The ocean has genuinely been a source of solace and support during difficult moments over the years. While it doesn’t magically solve problems, it provides a fresh perspective and helps me process things differently. Sometimes, after spending time in the water, problems that once seemed insurmountable become manageable again.

One of my cherished aspects of coastal living is raising children around the ocean. Watching kids grow up surfing, swimming, and spending their lives outdoors is truly special. They develop confidence, patience, resilience, respect for nature, and the ability to be comfortable in challenging situations. Sharing the ocean with your children also provides a grounding experience. Some of the most cherished memories are the salty drive home after a surf session, filled with stories about waves, contests, wipeouts, and daily adventures.

Surfing together fosters a unique connection that’s difficult to describe unless you’ve experienced it firsthand.

I believe this is a significant reason why so many people yearn for coastal living, even if they’ve never lived near the ocean before. Deep down, people seek peace, simplicity, connection, and balance. The ocean naturally brings them closer to these ideals.

It’s not about luxury.

It’s about waking up and feeling connected to your environment. It’s about spending more time outdoors, moving your body, breathing fresh air, and being present with loved ones. It’s about trading constant noise for a slower, healthier rhythm that benefits the mind, body, and emotions.

The ocean has a remarkable way of reminding us of what truly matters

And once people experience that feeling, it becomes difficult to forget.
