Love Where You Live- Reason #31: Bottleheads Hawaiʻi Kai

One of the things I’ve been thinking about a lot lately is how we define what makes a place feel like home.

It’s rarely the big things. It’s the small, familiar spaces where you can show up exactly as you are. No expectations. No performance. Just a sense that you belong there.

That’s really the spirit behind my Love Where You Live series. Not just highlighting places in Hawaiʻi Kai, but noticing the ones that quietly shape how it feels to live here.

Bottleheads in Hawaiʻi Kai is one of those places.

Owned by Hawaiʻi Kai resident Courtney Scurto, Bottleheads isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is—a welcoming neighborhood gathering spot where people can connect over a glass of wine, a local craft beer, or simply a moment in the day that doesn’t need to be rushed.

There’s something refreshing about that kind of space.

You can stop in during the day, browse local products, pick up a gift, or sit for a wine tasting and discover something new without feeling like you need to know what you’re doing. Or you can come later in the day, meet friends, and let the conversation stretch out longer than you planned.

What stands out most is how unforced it all feels. There’s no pretense here. Just an easy rhythm of people coming and going, settling in, reconnecting.

Bottleheads also reflects something I really value about Hawaiʻi Kai—its connection to local creativity and small business. The shelves aren’t just filled with products; they’re filled with pieces of people’s work, ideas, and effort. Local snacks, thoughtful goods, and artwork that turns a simple visit into something more meaningful. Even the art on the walls feels like part of the conversation, not just decoration.

It’s also one of those rare places that makes room for real life. Bring takeout. Bring your dog. Sit for a while or just pop in for a minute. There’s no wrong way to be there. That flexibility might seem small, but it changes how a place feels.

And then there are the moments you don’t plan for—live music nights, small gatherings, the kind of evenings that remind you how much community still matters when it’s allowed to form naturally.

I think that’s what stays with me most about Bottleheads. It’s not just a place to get a drink. It’s a place where people are given permission to slow down and be together without needing a reason.

In a place like Hawaiʻi Kai, where the scenery often gets all the attention—and rightfully so—it’s easy to overlook how much the everyday spaces matter just as much. The ones that hold the in-between moments of life.

Bottleheads is one of those spaces.

And for me, that’s really what Love Where You Live is about. Not just appreciating where we live, but noticing the people and places that make it feel like it’s truly ours.

It’s a reminder that community doesn’t just happen. It’s created, one welcoming space at a time.

And Bottleheads is a good example of that.
