Love Where You Live – Reason #29 – Night Markets in Hawaii Kai
One of the things I love most about Hawaii Kai is how quickly a regular evening can turn into something special when our community shows up. The Kalama Night Market was a perfect example of that—and a reminder of why this town feels like home.
As part of my Love Where You Live series, I try to highlight the moments that make our community more than just a place on a map. The Night Market wasn’t just an event; it was neighbors supporting neighbors, local businesses being celebrated, and a shared space where everyone belonged.
From the moment the market opened, the vibe was unmistakable. Friends bumped into each other and stopped to chat. Kids darted between booths with treats in hand. Couples strolled through, taking their time, soaking it all in. There was music in the air, laughter everywhere, and even some Christmas characters. I love that comfortable feeling that comes from being surrounded by familiar faces.

The food booths alone were worth the trip—so many options, all locally run, each with its own personality and flavors. The smell of fresh food drifted through the market, pulling people from one vendor to the next.

Alongside the food were handmade wares, art, and unique finds that you just don’t get from big-box stores. Every purchase felt personal because you could meet the person who made it or cooked it right there. One example is Stefani Truyol. I love her watercolors and artistic style. You can check her out on Instagram.

What made the Kalama Night Market truly special, though, was the sense of connection. This was our community coming together to support local vendors, creators, and small businesses in a meaningful way. It was a reminder that when we choose local, we’re not just buying something—we’re investing in each other.
Events like this don’t happen without people caring enough to show up, to participate, and to support what makes Kalama unique. The Night Market showed what’s possible when a community rallies together: a fun, welcoming evening that strengthens local businesses and brings neighbors closer.
This is why I love where I live. Because in Hawaii Kai, community isn’t just a word—it’s something you can feel, especially on nights like this, walking through the market, surrounded by good food, friendly faces, and a shared sense of pride in the place we call home.
