Love Where You Live – Reason #28 – Kalapawai Market

One of the things I love most about living in Hawai‘i Kai is how many incredible places lie just beyond our doorstep. Kalapawai Market in Waimānalo is one of those places. Granted, it isn’t technically in our neighborhood, but it’s close enough—and special enough—to feel like part of our extended backyard.

At only about 15 minutes away, the drive alone makes it worth the trip. The coastal route from Hawai‘i Kai to Waimānalo is one of the most scenic drives on O‘ahu. You’ll pass dramatic sea cliffs, turquoise ocean views, and lookout points that locals and visitors alike stop to admire. Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, and the iconic Makapuʻu Lookout are all along the way, turning a simple drive for coffee or lunch into a mini adventure.

Indoor Ambiance + Outdoor Comfort

Kalapawai offers both cozy indoor seating—perfect for catching up over coffee—and outdoor picnic-style tables where you can soak up the breeze and mountain views. The vibe is casual, welcoming, and effortlessly cool. This is the kind of place where you’re just as likely to see surfers grabbing lunch as families enjoying a relaxed breakfast.

The combination of good food, friendly servers like Audrey, and a mellow atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a laid-back meet-up with friends. It’s a community space in every sense—one that features island goods and invites you to slow down, talk story, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being present.

Even though it sits just outside of Hawaii Kai, Kalapawai fits beautifully into the spirit of this series. Loving where you live isn’t only about the immediate neighborhood – it’s about embracing the lifestyle, the surrounding beauty, and the nearby treasures that help define our everyday experience. Kalapawai Market is a reminder that some of the best places to enjoy great food, beautiful scenery, and genuine community connection are often just a short, scenic drive away.

So the next time you’re craving a place with great vibes, tasty food, and that signature Waimānalo charm, hop in the car, roll down the windows, and head to Kalapawai. You’ll love where you live just a little bit more.
