Some places hold more than history. They hold our memories.
When I came across the recent news that Parker Ranch is partnering with local investors to breathe new life into the former Jacaranda Inn, it brought back some wonderful childhood memories.
Growing up in Waimea in the late ’80s and ’90s, my parents would take us there for breakfast or brunch. I remember how beautiful the property was, inside and out.
After eating, we’d walk the grounds, and I especially loved wandering through the old house. The wooden floors creaked beneath our feet, and one room seemed to lead into another, and then another. There was something about that house that fascinated me as a little girl.
We knew it as Hale Kea back in those days, and I can still picture parts of it.
Just next door sits another beautiful piece of Waimea’s history, Anna Ranch, the home of Anna Lindsey Perry-Fiske, affectionately known as Aunty Anna. She was an extraordinary woman whose legacy is deeply woven into our town’s ranching heritage.
These two properties have stood alongside one another through so many changes in Waimea. And while their histories are remarkable, what I love most is that they are also places filled with personal memories for so many families.

A New Chapter for the Jacaranda Inn
On October 23, Big Island Now reported that Parker Ranch is partnering with Hawaiʻi-based investors, including developer Stanford Carr and longtime hotelier Jerry Gibson, to explore revitalizing the historic property.
The vision is for a boutique hospitality experience that honors Parker Ranch’s history and Waimea’s ranching heritage.
The property itself has quite a story. Originally built in the late 1800s, it served as the residence of A.W. Carter, who managed Parker Ranch. It later became a private retreat for Laurance Rockefeller before its years as a restaurant and eventually the Jacaranda Inn.
The plans are still in the early stages, with no development activity expected for at least another year.
I’m curious and hopeful about what comes next. There’s something wonderful about seeing a beautiful old property given the opportunity for a new chapter, especially when so many of us have memories tied to it.
And Then There’s Manaua
One of the most meaningful parts of the recent announcement is the commitment to protect Manaua, the sacred rain rock located on the property.
Manaua has deep cultural significance in Waimea, with traditions connecting the rock to a moʻo wahine, a female water guardian, and the calling of rain during times of drought.
For generations, people have brought lei and offerings to this place. It’s a reminder that long before these buildings and businesses existed, the land held stories and traditions that continue today.
Parker Ranch has stated that Manaua will remain under the ownership of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust, with continued community access.
I’m especially glad that preserving this place is part of the conversation as plans move forward.
The Places That Stay With Us
I think about how much Waimea has changed since I was a little girl. New homes, new businesses, new families, and new opportunities.
Change is inevitable, and sometimes it’s exciting. But I also think it’s important to remember the places and people who helped shape our town.
Hale Kea, Anna Ranch, Parker Ranch, and so many other familiar places are more than landmarks. They’re part of our stories.
I can still remember those mornings with my parents, the beautiful grounds, and the sound of those old wooden floors.
It’s funny what stays with you.
As the Jacaranda Inn begins its next chapter, I hope the history, character, and spirit of the property continue to be honored.
And I’d love to hear from others who remember it.
Did you ever have breakfast at Hale Kea, wander through the old house, or celebrate a special occasion there? What do you remember most?
Sometimes the best way to preserve a place’s history is to keep sharing its stories.
Always with Aloha,
