Celebrating Community, Legacy, and Stoke at the 45th Annual Pine Trees Longboard Classic
There are certain events on Kaua‘i that go beyond competition; they become part of the heartbeat of our community. The Pine Trees Longboard Classic in Hanalei is one of them. Now in its 45th year, this beloved gathering brings together generations of surfers, families, and friends to celebrate not just the sport, but the lifestyle and connection that make our island so special.

This year’s event, happening April 17–19, carries even deeper meaning as we honor the legacy of “Uncle Bobby” — Bobby Cox — a 14-time champion of this very contest and a true icon in our surf community. His recent passing from Alzheimer’s has left a profound void, but his spirit lives on in every wave ridden.
For me, the Pine Trees Longboard Classic is one of my favorite weekends of the year. I’ve been fortunate to participate for many years, surfing in the Aunties Division alongside an incredible group of women, all of us over 50, all of us still paddling out each morning with stoke and gratitude. We laugh, we cheer each other on, and we remind one another that surfing isn’t just something we do—it’s part of who we are.

It’s what keeps us young!
Events like this—and the recent Andy Irons Forever Festival—highlight what makes our community so unique. It’s not just about world-class waves (though Hanalei certainly delivers). It’s about connection. It’s about showing up for one another. It’s about creating space where keiki as young as five and kūpuna well into their 70’s can all share the ocean together.
There’s something incredibly special about standing on the beach and seeing that full spectrum of life—generations united by saltwater, stories, and aloha.

I’m also especially grateful that Hawaii Life has supported this event. Being part of a company that values community, culture, and lifestyle as much as we do is something I never take for granted. Supporting events like the Pine Trees Longboard Classic is just one of the many reasons I’m proud to be part of Hawaii Life.
If you’re on Kaua‘i this weekend, come down to Hanalei. Bring your family, your friends, and your beach chairs. Whether you surf or just want to soak in the energy, this event truly offers something for everyone.
From 5 to 95, there’s no better place to be.
See you in the lineup—or on the beach.
