Andy Irons Forever Festival: Community, Legacy, and the Next Generation

For those visiting Kaua‘i or who are new to the island, the name Andy Irons might not immediately hit, but here, he’s more than just a world champion surfer. He’s a huge part of the island’s identity.

A 3x world champion, Andy represented Kaua‘i with a kind of passion and intensity that people here still feel today.

The 21st annual Andy Irons Forever Festival returns to Hanalei Bay from April 2nd–5th, and it’s one of those special weekends where that legacy comes to life. It’s about honoring who Andy was and what he meant to this community.

While the surf contest is a big part of it, the festival goes well beyond the lineup. From community gatherings and live music to events supporting the Andy Irons Foundation, the whole weekend has a way of bringing people together both in and out of the water.

Where It All Begins

One of the most special parts of the weekend is the Keiki Push-In for kids 7 & under. Watching the youngest kids get pushed into waves is something you don’t forget. It’s not about winning or losing—it’s just pure stoke. You can feel how it all starts right there.

For many of them, it’s their first time competing, which makes those moments even more special.

That part always hits home for me. I’ve had a front row seat over the years with my daughter Gigi competing in this event, and it’s been special to watch that progression from those first pushed-in waves to real competition over time.

From there, you see it build. The kids gain confidence, the level rises, and you start to see real talent coming through. But the vibe stays the same—supportive and rooted in community.

Giving Back to the Next Generation

A big part of what makes this event so meaningful is how the community shows up. With Lyndie Irons and the Irons ʻohana at the heart of it, along with volunteers and sponsors, there’s a real focus on supporting youth and keeping kids connected to the ocean in a positive way.

That work goes beyond the festival too, including efforts around mental health and initiatives like the Andy Irons Legacy Scholarship, which continues to carry forward the values Andy lived by: kindness, connection, and looking out for the next generation.

More Than Just a Contest

That’s what makes this event stand out. It’s not just about remembering Andy—it’s about continuing what he represented. Families on the beach, friends cheering each other on, and the next generation right in the middle of it all.

Events like this are a big part of what makes Kaua‘i so special. They bring everyone together in a way that feels real.
