Born and raised on Kauai, I had the good fortune of growing up in a prominent developer and general contracting family with deep roots on the Garden Island. My grandfather, Jim Blackwell, founded Blackwell Builders in Lihue in 1969 and Sleeping Giant Realty in 1974 (SGR eventually branched off into two companies; Oceanfront Sotheby's International Realty, and Kauai Vacation Rentals, both still thriving today under new ownership).
Developments started by my grandfather were Hanalei Palms, Anini Vista (completed by another developer), Kauai Gardens, Sleeping Giant Half Acres, Wailua Half Acres, Poipu Crater, Poipu Makai, and Poipu Palms. In the 70’s Blackwell Builders was thought to have built 80% of Princeville homes at that time. But his prolific developments continued through Wailua, Lihue and Poipu. My grandfather is also credited with creating the concept of the CPR (Condominium Property Regime…ask me about this) prior to the County finally embracing it many years later. He was an avid believer of family helping family, and family helping community and he created jobs for many subcontractors and real estate agents who still give him credit to this day. His idea of sweat equity in home ownership during his contracting and developing days gave many people a leg up and their first home.
After Hurricane Iwa in 1982, my father established Curtis Law Construction, allowing Blackwell Builders to retire, and Curtis Law Construction to begin. I had the pleasure of working for my dad right out of high school as a "go-fer" and later on as a project manager and estimator from 2008 to 2012. I think by far, this was the catalyst for my understanding of hard work and perseverance. My dad had the utmost trust and confidence in me even when I had no idea what to do. He basically threw me into the construction industry at 18 years old at an entry level and knew I'd figure it out. Many, many good memories working closely with our local friends and customers who helped me along the way.
I earned my real estate salesperson license in 2001 and have now worked full time in real estate for over two decades. I also earned my real estate brokers license in 2011 and hold designations as a CRS (Certified Residential Specialist), SFR (Short Sales and Foreclose Resource), and ePro (an online marketing and social media certification). I formerly served as Chair for the Professional Standards Committee and am currently 2021 President at Kauai Board of Realtors.
I specialize in residential sales and property management with just over 50 long-term rentals, 6 short-term rentals (Vacation Rentals), and a rental and sales clientele that grows daily.
I maintain a strong commitment to honest, ethical professional practices and devote my full attention to excellent customer service by focusing on each client’s individual needs. As a result, my clients often become friends and come back time and again for advice or representation. It’s my privilege to serve the Kauai community with hard work, integrity, and a unique understanding and love for historical, cultural and rural preservation of my island home.
When I’m not hard at work, I’m enjoying my role as the proud mom of a college student studying archaeology. I also enjoy traveling, photography, camping, running, spending time at the beach, and playing with my newest “child”, Penelope, our rascally French Bulldog. My frecklefacefotography.smugmug.com website is an outlet for sharing my love of photography with the world. Please feel free to visit me there or at:
