Custom Build in Kona Update: "We Have a Roof!"

Hard to believe in just a couple of weeks we went from concrete slab to framed and now the roof! The building process is interesting…at this stage it feels like we’ll be moving in real soon? Not so fast! To the eye, you see walls going up…roof going on…but now prepare for the very detail-oriented part of the process.

The roof is on!

Many other things are being decided at this time. Flooring, kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Counter tops. Plumbing and lighting fixtures. You can either be excited about searching and selecting what you like, or let it overwhelm you. My advice is “get into it.” If you are building this with a spouse or partner, respect their thoughts and ideas or you may be asking for trouble.

Many things are now available and in-stock at the big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot. We are supporting a local supplier for the majority of our building materials. They are very competitive in pricing and I find the service to be, as we say in Hawaii, “mo’ betta.”

Important Note

Building in the islands sometimes brings challenges for receiving items you may want to special order. This is when you want to really be on the same page of your General Contractor and Subs for scheduling. Some items can take six, eight, even ten weeks or more to receive. If you don’t want to break momentum, you have to meet your completion date, stay on top of your details.

framers

Our amazing framers

Also, I can’t say this enough, building is a pleasure when you have the right guys on the job. Jason and his crew, Jay, Brian, and Sean, are our framers and they are nothing short of amazing!

Mahalo, boys…

You are helping make our dream home a reality – and man…this is FUN!
