Early Hawaiians called Spouting Horn “puhi,” or blowhole. Blowholes were formed when waves eroded softer underlying lava rock and wore through the harder rock. As water from an incoming wave rushes into the hole, it is forced through the narrow opening, and with no where else to go, it is forced up like a geyser. Observe the signs when there, it is never safe to climb around the fencing and walk out onto the lava!
