Does a Photo of Your Realtor Sell Your Home?

If you were to sell your home on Oahu, which picture would you prefer be advertised?

A. or B.?

I’ve noticed, more and more, you see Realtors advertising themselves instead of the homes their clients hire them to sell. The Star Advertiser in Honolulu is out of control. If I were a consumer looking through the Sunday paper here for a property to buy, it’s very difficult to tell what is what. There are many more photos of Realtors than there are properties for sale. From a visual standpoint, it’s become more of a “Who Has the Best Photo of Themselves” section instead of a “Homes” section.

If I were a seller looking to get my property sold, I would want my home to be featured instead of a picture of my Realtor. Doesn’t that make sense? Isn’t that what we get hired to do? Are we not supposed to promote our properties? It’s one thing to promote yourself for business, however, why should a seller care about a picture of their Realtor when they are paying thousands of dollars to get their property sold?

Forgive me if I am ranting. This is just one of my pet peeves, like Realtors putting misleading photos in MLS. When you work with one of our Hawaii Life agents, you get genuine marketing. It’s not about us. It’s about you.

Instead of spending money splattering pictures of ourselves in the newspaper*, our marketing dollars are spent online where over 90% of home buyers are searching. If you think this makes sense, please contact me to learn more about how we list property properly.

*Less than 2% of home buyers found their home from the newspaper according to the 2010 National Association of Realtors study.

Thanks for this post. I’m with you 100%. Real estate has become like politics… Less about the actual content, and more about what the candidate looks like or how they can come up with talking points inside of a 30-second sound bite. The truth is, the issues are complex. They require complex thought and consideration. A two-page spread with a life-sized picture of a Realtor’s face says nothing about their ability to navigate a client through one of the most significant financial transactions in their life.

And, if you’re spending so much money on print media, why isn’t the house I hired you sell in the ad?

@Matt- You should pick up a paper next time you’re in town. It’ll crack you up. It’s like a competition of who can see themselves the most instead of what homes are for sale. I think the papers like to play on people’s ego strings.

Real estate is about buyers, sellers, and real property not Realtors. This was an amusing post and you hit it on the head David.
