Eco-Sustainable Properties on the Big Island of Hawaii

Aloha from Hawaii!

I’ve noticed that many Big Island buyers are looking for properties that are self-sustainable…Off-the-grid acreage with room for a home, possible rental income unit, space for crops, with no limit to the types of eco-energy sources that can be used.

Some of the things these forward-thinking buyers are looking for:

  • Solar water heater
  • Photovoltaic electricity
  • Wind mill
  • Propane
  • River, lake, or natural flowing fresh water access
  • Lots of space for healthy crops
  • Pastures for livestock

And all located in a community that offers the same like-minded people who have established similar Hawaii lifestyles.

We found many properties like this tucked away in the country communities of Waimea, Honoka’a, Laupahoehoe, and Paauilo, just to name a few (probably due to the rainfall and sunshine balance).

Gorgeous well-maintained properties with quality built homes on them, meticulously cared for farms, and some had expansive views of the countryside, Pacific Ocean, and beyond…I was quite impressed! A couple of the properties even offered both county water AND water catchment tank systems for the security of having both available. Wow!

Next, we venture South of the Big Island to see what’s available…the prices are very appealing for the opportunities we are looking for…9+ acres with a 1,300 sq. ft. house for $189,000…it’s definitely worth a look for the price!

Okay, more soon…eco-sustainable properties, here we come!

Hi Claire
There is a broker’s open of eco-sustainable properties in North Kohala being planned for February 3rd. Great opportunity to see what’s available in the Hawi-Kapaau area.

Wow, Thanks Beth! I will look up more information.. I’m learning that the properties in the Honoka’a into Paauilo area have access to County water.. that is a big plus for these sustainable buyers.. even though they want to be off the grid.. at least they will have drinking water available on the property.. Mahalo Beth!
