About - Maui is the second largest island in Hawaii. Prevailing trade winds on Maui result in more rainfall on the north and northeast-facing shores, leaving central, south and southwest Maui quite dry. The dormant volcanic peak of Haleakala (“house of the sun”) soars more than 10,000 feet above sea level, and its slopes make up about 75% of Maui, with the western 25% of the island formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, most often referred to as the West Maui Mountains.

What You’ll Find - The island offers tons of variety for those looking to buy a piece of Maui real estate. Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala, upcountry Maui real estate is located at elevations ranging from 1,000 and 4,000 feet above sea level, where the air is cooler. Living on Maui’s North Shore puts you right in the heart of one of the world’s favorite surf destinations, with Jaws (Peahi) at your doorstep. In the Kihei, Makena and Wailea areas, you’ll find plenty of tourism, with great restaurants, cafés, watersports, shopping and amenities nearby. In West Maui, Lāhaina, Kāʻanapali, and Wailuku

Lifestyle - There’s no major city on Maui. Known as the Valley Isle, Maui is sought after for its unique beauty, incredible beaches, charming small towns, and some of the best surf in the world, especially along Maui’s North Shore. Outdoor adventures and watersports abound, but if you want to laze on the beach with a good book, visit a coffee farm or watch the whales migrating in winter, Maui is great for that, too. A rich farming tradition has led to plenty of elevated culinary experience in Hawaii, and Maui is no exception. Expect to find great food in the most casual and even the finest of dining establishments.

Appeal - Maui’s slow pace of life, abundant natural beauty, and abundant farm-to-table dining make it a favorite for those looking for a relaxed lifestyle with lots of luxury amenities, adventure, and beautiful beaches. Without a big city and lots of open spaces, Maui feels a bit like a land lost in time. The view planes from the slopes of Haleakala and from the West Maui Mountains hold huge appeal for many residents, as do the wide variety of beaches. You can find rugged, windswept beaches with big surf or calm, white sand havens along Maui’s shores.

Amenities - In Waikulu, Maui residents shop at one of the biggest Whole Foods stores in the state, and one of the busiest Costco locations in the United States. Maui islanders have access to three major supermarket chains islandwide, as well as smaller retailers, as well. Many airlines offer short, direct flights from the West Coast to Kahului Airport, the island’s main airport. It’s one of the most modern, updated, clean airports you’ll find anywhere. Maui also has two smaller airports: the Kapalua Airport in West Maui and the Hana Airport in East Maui. There are several major hospitals on Maui, and Honolulu is just a short 30-minute flight away for those craving some city life.

Market Info - For the purposes of real estate search, Maui County real estate includes the islands of Lanai and Molokai. Maui is a favorite for Canadian snowbirds looking to get away from the winter, and a beloved second home and destination for residents of the West Coast here in the U.S. There’s quite a bit of high-end Maui homes for sale, including single-family homes and sprawling oceanfront estates.
