Wainaku, Hilo Big Island Real Estate

Wainaku is a residential community just north of Hilo town. It is bordered by Hilo’s historic downtown to the south, and Paukaa to the north. Wainaku is historically a plantation community that once held several businesses. Since the closing of the sugar cane industry and mills it has quieted down into a residential neighborhood of plantation-era homes and condominiums closer to the coast, and agricultural lands further into the foothills rising above Hilo.

Wainaku shares much the same history and home designs as other sugar cane plantation communities along the Hamakua Coast. You’ll find a range of Hawaiian-style cottages, modern homes, and beautiful upkept homes from the earlier half of the 19th century all in one neighborhood. Homes are built mostly along Wainaku Street, though there is a small neighborhood up Kaiwiki Road that enjoys beautiful views and a relaxing setting in the tropical forests. This is a fantastic place to grow many tropical plants, hence the number of working farms along Amauulu Road.

This is a convenient neighborhood to jump into town for work or recreation. Surfers will appreciate the proximity to Honolii and Bay Front.
