Pepeekeo is a country community set along the Hamakua Coast between Papaikou and Honomu. The community is divided into upper subdivisions above Highway 19, and lower neighborhoods along the coast close to the shoreline cliffs. Many homes are plantation-style one-story residences with spacious yards and fruit trees. Sprawling villas are tucked along shoreline cliffs with front-row views of golden sunrises above the Pacific Ocean. A sugar cane mill and Hawai‘i’s railway system were once the centers of the town. Now, the quiet community is home to a handful of small stores and eateries, a post office, a community center, and community parks.

A prominent feature of the region is the historic 4 Mile Scenic Route, or the Old Mamalahoa Highway, which winds along the coast from Papaikou to the lower neighborhoods of Pepeekeo. Under a canopy of towering rainforest trees, the small road leads past agricultural estates, Onomea Bay, and the Tropical Bioreserve and Garden, home to thousands of plant species from around the world.
