Honomu is located on the northeastern edge of the Big Island along the majestic Hamakua Coast. Like neighboring towns along this coastline, Honomu was once a sugar cane plantation community. Now, the quiet main street and residential neighborhoods allow for peaceful country living. The historic town of Honomu is lined with a few small art galleries and eateries and visitors frequent the community on their way to visit Akaka Falls State Park. Homes here are plantation-style one-story houses with large yards, and many have mature fruit trees. Climate in this region is tropical, with temperatures ranging in the high 60’s to low 80’s year-round. This area receives around 140 inches of rain per year along with generous sunshine.

Panoramic ocean views greet those driving the 4-mile route above Honomu to reach Akaka Falls. Besides the stunning 422-foot waterfall, the park features walking trails with towering banyan trees set against dense rainforest and a kaleidoscope of tropical plants. Hilo is an 11-mile drive south along Highway 19.
