Along the Hamakua Coast 17 miles north of Hilo lies the historic community of Hakalau. Like many towns across the coast, Hakalau was once centered around the sugar cane industry, with a mill and train station that connected the community to other stops along the coastal route. As the sugar cane era passed in the first half of the 20th century, Hakalau became a quiet town set against the backdrop of dense forests and the peaks of Mauna Kea.

Most dwellings are single-family plantation-style homes. Acreage ranges in size, from homes set in neighborhoods along quiet roads to larger estates with sprawling pasture and forest land. Many homes sit on large parcels, and those along the coast feature breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Inland and to the West, the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge holds some of Hawaii’s finest remaining stands of native rainforest in Hawaii.

Hakalau Bay is a short drive into the gulch below the Hakalau Stream bridge. The black sand beach has been a popular camping and surfing destination over the years. Remnants of the old sugar mill are visible along the oceanside.
