Talk Story #38 – New Waikiki Sand “Recycling and Replenishing” Challenges

Waikiki Beach before the bulldozers appeared

Keeping Hawaii’s visitors and kama’aina happy and especially not disturbing the pleasure of visiting this famous beach area is high on the list, but as always, there seems to be unexpected challenges with a large project such as the Waikiki beach sand replenishment.

The latest news is that the planned distribution of recycled ocean sand (which has been pumped in from nearby shoals and piled high) was to be ‘air blown’ through piping along the beach, but was found not to be feasible to keep within the timeline expected.

Thus, trucks and bulldozers will now haul the sand to the various areas and work during the morning hours from March 14-April 14. Most of the 2.5 mile beach will remain open and hotel officials have noted that people will still be able to reach the ocean during this time through designated paths – a temporary inconvenience for a wonderful new spacious beach to enjoy – just like it was back some 25 years ago!

For Visitors

Mornings are a splendid opportunity to visit other beautiful Oahu beaches all around the island. Perhaps on the windward side of the Ko’olau mountain range, watch windsurfers with their colorful sails at the wide and wonderful Kailua Beach or a gorgeous, quiet but often striking orange and pink clouded sunrise.

Or continue the drive along the coast toward Rabbit Island…and the North Shore.

Then in the afternoon, be back to enjoy sinking your toes into the fresh new Waikiki sand as you stroll along, or go for a late afternoon swim with a setting sun sky.
