Talk Story #25 – Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction and Benefit

Hawaii is known for its world class surfers, and the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Scholarship Fund is a major recipient for the exciting auction being held the weekend of July 23rd-24th, 2011 at the Blaisdell Center, located in the Kaka’ako area. It is a superb concert hall/arena for a multitude of music, arts, and other activities. Just another example of enjoying a variety of things to do on Oahu. The multitude of surfboards displayed are diverse, and range from all styles and years.

John Kelly board description

It is wonderful to view the 1920’s planks and the modifications through the years. In the early 1960’s, the Greg Noll (pioneer of the big wave riding skills) boards were extremely popular, one of which my brother, Jim, proudly had and avidly used almost daily (pictured below).

At that time, I remember my brother was the news director for a Honolulu radio/TV station and had lost track of the time while out surfing. He rushed into the office, propped up his board, quickly changed into the standard white shirt and tie, combed back his hair, and slid into his seat just in time. He then turned to the camera, and very calmly in his deep voice said, “Good evening, this is James Elliott.” So professional and ready.

I broke into laughter as I stood outside the broadcast door, with its little red light on, looking through the viewing window (so different from today’s TV world), for I noticed my brother still had on his wet swim trunks under the desk with somewhat sandy bare feet. No one knew. Ahh, those were the days!
