Big Island

Buyer's Tip – Forms of High Valued Landscaping Flora and Fauna to Look for in a Property

Aloha! I recently toured a Big Island farm estate in Kainaliu that was planted in a mixture of Kona coffee trees, citrus trees, tropical fruit and flowers, and fauna of such a high quality, I felt it was worth sharing.

Whenever I see giant, healthy tropical plants like this on a property, I immediately add value to the property and regard the owners who care for these beautiful exotic pieces of nature as landscape artists.

Because of the value that these magical flora have—I value the land in terms of the quality and quantity of “marketable” tropical plants that can be sold to florists. I wish I could name all of the flowers and plants I saw, and if anyone knows the names of these, please share! There were many types of giant Heliconia of many shapes and vibrant colors!

This type of Heliconia is very popular in tropical arrangements. Regarded for their prominent colors and beautiful geometry, I love when flower artists display them in those giant vases that sit at about 4 ft. and taller.

Mary and Matt Lovein at the Holualoa Gallery create these awesome giant vases, and I think I’ve seen these tropical flowers displayed in those giant Ming vases in the lobby at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

The owner of this gorgeous property was telling me about these certain Heliconia that have a waxy film on them, and if you oil these flowers with a natural oil, the wax comes off and they are left beautifully shiny and perfect for display and arrangements.

I’ve never seen this type of Heliconia before—look at the blue seed at the bottom, and the contrast of yellow, green, purple, red, and browns…such a “dramagical” mixture of colors!

These purple flowers were on the side of the house, but their sharp color attracted me to them. Landscaping can add huge value to the property.

This property is being offered at $2.2 million, and I would say that just the landscaping alone could have been worth at least $500,000…the property felt like a loved botanical garden with homes, a reservoir, and gorgeous giant flowers displayed before you…truly a piece of Heaven on Earth.

I love taking pictures of the sacred geometry of nature, and these flowers had so many shapes and colors, I was blown away at Mother Nature’s creations!

There were also different types of variegated ti leaf plants near the walking path, and they were absolutely gorgeous! The elevation of this Kainaliu property was about 1,300 ft.—perfect elevation for these tropical plants. Most of the plants were either gigantic, or lush…and the ti leaves were amongst the prospering. These types of ti leaves are a hybrid mix, and can be very expensive when bought at a nursery.

One of the owners told me that he was so fortunate to have a friend who was moving, and wanted him to have plants from her yard—so he managed to get many of these gorgeous pieces of nature for free, or minimal charge through friends and acquaintances…what a blessing, and a sign of people who live with “aloha!”

Any property that offers this type of gorgeous landscaping, shows a lot about the care and quality that the owners have for their “home,” and you will be sure to find more high-end, or upgraded quality features throughout the property.

The organization of crops and the designs of the homes on this property are very tasteful, and offer a great “quality of life” feeling as you walk this living paradise. If you would like to see this property for sale, please contact me—I’d be happy to orient you with your new piece of Heaven!

I hope you enjoyed my picture tour of flora and fauna on this gorgeous Kainaliu estate! I look forward to giving you more buyer’s tips to help you choose the perfect property!

Blessings and Aloha,

You capture the essence of the Green Gecko Farm so well! What a special property that is! Do you remember the name of that little red ginger we tasted? I recall button ginger, but am not sure. I would like to get some and grow it on our farm! Beautiful Blog Claire! Aloha!

Awesome photos, Claire! And don’t forget this property not only is a working Kona coffee farm (ummm…yummm!) and the owners have also lovingly created the gardens to be repopulated with tons of native plants and trees, and have a pond stocked with Talapia! Truly a dream come true for some lucky buyer!
