Our 5 Armed Forces Divisions are honored

At the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, a new tradition was started with the Worcester Wreath Co. in Maine donating 5 wreaths to Punchbowl every year, where they are placed next to the Armed Forces seals at the flagpole. This has now become a full-scale campaign honoring our fallen Veterans across America at the national cemeteries.

Here on Oahu, 1,288 wreaths were placed in the central section of the cemetery with the assistance of 11 Civil Air Patrol members, and many more volunteers. A striking and memorable sight for those who visit. Punchbowl Crater is one of the most visited national cemeteries with a lot of history.

A personal side note: I remember going with my father and brother up to Punchbowl, and finding a cousin’s cross.

There were thousands of those white crosses all in rows, everywhere I could see. It was a very dramatic realization and visual example to a child of how many servicemen had sacrificed their lives to keep us safe. Today, the immediate impact is not there, except perhaps in December with the center area of wreaths.

Now, the acres of lovely lawn and tall trees with their grave markers flat on the ground, still invokes a quietness, and the permeating hope that someday there will indeed be peace on Earth and good will toward all.
