Affordable Hawaii Lifestyle On Oahu

Recently a friend of mine said to me, “How can you afford to live in Hawaii?”

I would like to highlight a few “key” points about living here on Oahu:

  • Property taxes for residents of Oahu, Hawaii are approximately (.342% of the home’s assessed value)
  • Hawaii does not collect income tax on US military pensions
  • Sales tax on Oahu is 4.5%
  • Regular unleaded is approximately $3.35 per gallon
  • A median priced home in West Oahu (near Honolulu and the beach) is approximately $450,000. Check out some homes at Ocean Point in West Oahu.
  • You can buy a brand new custom built, energy efficient home in a “Resort Marina” development such as “Hoakalei” starting at approximately $500,000
  • All your “Big Box” outlets are here: Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot…etc.
  • Strong labor force
  • Warm and healthy climate coupled with a clean environment…Healthy Lifestyle
  • Lifestyle…many outdoor activities with little or no cost!  Boating, Sailing, Fishing, Dive, Surf, Paddle, Swim, Hike, Bike, Run, Golf, Tennis, Beach Bar-B-Que and more
  • Fresh local foods abound
  • Light casual clothing
  • Excellent and plentiful hospitals/Health practitioners
  • Major airport “Hub of the Pacific”…..Excellent flight routes and schedules locally and overseas
  • It’s America….It’s Hawaii and it’s “Affordable”

Aloha Rich – great post! For me, it always comes down to lifestyle! When people ask me that question, I often ask in return, “How can you afford NOT to live in Hawaii?” 🙂 The only real trick to living here is that ultimately, I’m bound to live longer and thus may need to work more years to be able to afford to live well into my 90’s!! That’s a trade-off that I’m willing to make!

I am going to move in Oahu nearby Waikiki Beach with some friends to accomplish my dream to live here. I know it would be a struggle at the beginning, just like any other move to someplace. Your article is very helpful and still open to hearing more about Hawaii.

I am looking into moving to Hawaii next year around this time. I am from Canada and am unsure of how to go about it but I am open to learning everything. I feel like I need a change to become my own person and so I think Hawaii is the right place for me. This article helped me to understand that with a little hard work you can make anything work even high prices(which I am used to anyway) If anyone has any info they would like to share I am all ears 🙂
