Pahala is a community on the southeastern side of the Big Island. Highway 11 borders the community, leading 32 miles northeast to Volcano Village and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and 23 miles southwest to Naalehu. The Kau Forest Reserve lines the region’s eastern edge. The community was once a sugar cane plantation town, and as the sugar industry dwindled Pahala turned towards other agricultural endeavors such as macadamia nuts and coffee.

Houses here are largely unassuming single-story plantation-style homes. Parcels of untouched acreage are a prime opportunity for homesteaders interested in cultivating land and building custom homes.

Pahala has a tropical climate with temperatures typically ranging from the low 60’s to low 80’s Fahrenheit. The region is home to one of the world’s largest macadamia nut orchards, cattle and horse ranches, and independent Kau coffee farms. The region's Kau coffee is an award winning, rich coffee that has gained international attention. For beach goers, the tranquil, sandy shores of Kamehame Beach lie just south of Pahala, offering a place to relax and unwind.
