Renting a Home with Pets in Hawaii

Pets. They are a part of the family, plain and simple. If you are a self-proclaimed dog freak like me, you might go as far as saying they are your children. Let me tell you about my most recent experience trying to find a place to live with my two purr-fect pups.

The beginning of this journey started with a text from my property manager. He informed me that my landlords were selling the place, and I had until the end of June (it was the beginning of May) to move out. I thought to myself as an agent, “Okay, escrow is a 45-day process, that is about the amount of time I have. I totally have this under control.”

*Buzzer sound* WRONG.

After two weeks on the hunt, spending an endless amount of time searching all avenues from Craigslist to the MLS website (the site agents use to find properties for their clients), I was out of luck. Every listing that I found and loved did not allow pets. And if they did allow them, two pets was an absolute no-no. Many landlords seem to believe that pets will tear their place to shreds and leave it smelling not-so-great. I quickly realized that I had an immediate goal in life: Buying a home. If I were to purchase a home, no one could tell me what I could or couldn’t do inside of the home. No one could tell me that my fur children couldn’t be there.

After many late nights and headaches, I did end up finding a rental. As an agent, I believe in the Hawaii market and know Hawaii is the place I want to live long term. Buying a home has always been high on my priority list, but can seem daunting, especially on my own.  I am determined to buy a place because of the control it offers in comparison to renting. I mean, take a look at the ladies below, how could you say no to those faces?!

If you are currently looking for a rental or plan to in the future, contact me and let’s go over your buying options. Many people don’t realize that they can qualify for a home. With interest rates at all time lows, the time to invest and buy in Hawaii is now.

Great article Tarah. I too am a self admitted animal crazy :). When we moved here in 2006 we realized beforehand that rentals were few and far between and we ended up purchasing. My husband and I are in the process of saving to purchase a rental property so that we can start ( I hope ) a trend of fur family friendly rentals . I know I could not say no to those faces.
