Kaunakakai is Molokai’s main town for groceries, shopping, and entertainment. This quiet town doesn’t have a stop light, and there isn’t afternoon traffic to wrestle with. Ala Malama Avenue is the main strip with shops and there are other local eateries and grocery stores throughout. The island’s boat harbor is found here, connecting Molokai to Maui with a daily ferry. You’ll also find Hawaii’s longest pier right at Kaunakakai Harbor. Molokai airport is in Hoolehua, a 15-minute drive north along Mauna Loa Highway.

Kaunakakai includes small subdivisions of single-family homes and condominiums set on either side of Hawaii State Route 450. Most homes are small to mid-sized single-story designs. Hotel Molokai and Molokai Shores are condominium complexes set along the ocean. Thanks to the sloping elevation, some properties have wonderful views of three islands – Maui, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.

The town includes several restaurants, grocery stores, Molokai Yacht Club, Molokai Canoe Club, a hospital, Kalokoeli Fishpond, and Maui Community College extension campus. Maunaloa is about 25 minutes northwest, and Papohaku Beach is just beyond that.
