10 Activities for a Rainy Day on Maui

Let’s face it, people come to Maui for the notoriously beautiful weather and sun-filled beach days. On the leeward (drier) side of the island where most vacationers stay, it rarely rains. But if you find yourself here on one of these occasions, don’t worry. Here are 10 fun activities that can be enjoyable on a rainy day on Maui. Remember, rain means rainbows!

1. Explore World Class Resorts

If you’re staying at a luxury resort, you may have never considered exploring the others. And if you’re staying in a vacation condo, a rainy day is a great reason to get away from your own pool to see what $1000 per night can get you. Head down to Wailea to see the fountains at the Grand Wailea or to the Westin in Kaanapali to take pictures of the pink flamingos. While exploring high-end shops, stunning lobbies, picturesque dining options and glamorous pools, you’ll be happy it rained.

2. Root for Your Home Team

Hawaii: Where football games kickoff in the morning and those primetime basketball games are played during happy hour. While you may have felt guilty for wanting to watch your favorite sports team while on vacation, now’s your excuse. Catch a ride to a local bar or restaurant for discounted food and drinks during happy hour to watch a game.

3. See the Aquarium

Located in Maalaea Harbor, Maui Ocean Center is the place to enjoy marine life on a rainy day in Maui. With beautiful coral displays, eels, octopus, rays, humuhumunukunukuapuaas, and sharks, the aquarium is a perfect alternative when your snorkeling trip gets canceled.

4. Shop ‘Till it Stops

Maui has shopping options for all budgets. Looking for high-end clothing and jewelry? Head to the Shops at Wailea. If you’re shopping for deals, visit the Outlets of Maui in Lahaina. For touristy souvenirs, stay undercover at Kalama Village in Kihei. With something for everyone, Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului has department stores, boutique shops, restaurants, a gaming arcade, and movie theater.

5. Visit a Different Part of the Island

While island wide storms do occur, scattered showers are more prevalent. If you’re somewhere on Maui where it’s raining and your heart is set on sunshine, take a drive. If it’s raining on one side, there’s a chance it’s clear on another. Get online to check the weather then set out for a sunny and dry beach or park to enjoy.

6. Get a Massage

Unless you’re sunburnt, there’s never a bad time to get a massage. But a rainy day on Maui is the perfect time for this experience. Pamper yourself at a luxury resort spa or seek out more affordable options around the town you’re staying in.

7. Go to the Beach

Ever picture a beautiful Maui beach without the people? This rainy day could be your chance to see it in person.  Don’t let unfortunate weather damper your holiday! Relax under a beach umbrella and look out toward the horizon scouting for whales (in winter months). Or bring out your inner child and make a castle with the wet sand. With a positive mindset, this experience could turn out to be the highlight of your vacation.

8. Escape Room

The newer trend of your group entering a room and trying to solve puzzles to “escape” has grown around the world, and Maui has caught on. With several different options of rooms in various parts of the island available, a rainy day could be a great time to give one a try.

9. Get Underwater

If you’re going to get wet on land, why not be underwater? Assuming you can find a site with good visibility, rent some dive gear or take a boat trip and go diving. Not into SCUBA? Take a trip with Lahaina’s Atlantis Submarine. Not only will you have fun, but marine life can be more active with the rain. You never know what you may find…

10. Find Your Maui Home

On the mainland, real estate open houses are primarily held on the weekends. In Hawaii, it’s always somebody’s weekend and you can tour properties seven days a week. Drive through Kihei or Kaanapali watching for open house signs. Stop inside to learn what you could buy on Maui. Not only might you get some complimentary sweets, you may decide to make an offer. What greater souvenir could you buy on Maui than your own vacation condo?! If you've found yourself on a rainy day in Maui, please reach out if touring real estate sparks your interest.
