Where is the Best Place to Live in Waikiki?

Waikiki is a famous neighborhood in Honolulu. On any given day, there are thousands of tourists and residents enjoying Waikiki Beach, many of the restaurants, and shopping. It’s a busy place filled with many happy people. While half of Waikiki is made up of hotels, the other half are regular condos. So how does one enjoy Waikiki while living a regular life in Honolulu? It all comes down to individual preferences; beach access, view, traffic, location.

Waikiki.

If you are a resident of Honolulu, or if you have visited several times, you may already be familiar with the neighborhood enough to be able to have a preference of where you would like to live. If you are not familiar with it, here are a few general points to consider.

  • The area closest to the Ala Moana Blvd bridge that goes over the Ala Wai canal (directly behind Ala Wai Harbor), is mostly residential. With the exception of The Prince and the Ilikai, all the buildings are condominiums. This area is easy to enter and exit, and is the closest to Ala Moana Center, with easy access to the H1 freeway via Piikoi St. The area is relatively quiet since most of the tourist activity is located further into Waikiki. This is a great area for anyone who loves Waikiki, but also doesn’t want to be in the thick of things.

Here are the condos that are located in this area of Waikiki.

  • Most of the buildings between Kuhio Ave and Ala Wai Blvd are residential. The majority of the hotels are closer to the ocean. As a result, most of the Waikiki crowd are also close to the ocean, and the residential areas are fairly peaceful. I say “relatively” because we are talking about Waikiki. It’s not your average neighborhood, and that’s also the beauty of it.  It’s fun, it’s busy, and it’s also super eclectic. Old, new, and everything in between. This area of Waikiki stretches the full length of the neighborhood and it involves driving deeper into Waikiki through several stoplights. There are many buildings along Ala Wai Blvd with spectacular views of the mountain ridges of Honolulu. Smaller buildings with city views, and also several buildings with beautiful views of Waikiki Beach.

There is no right or wrong area when considering Waikiki. It’s more about personal preferences and needs. If a less touristy area is desired, the West (Ewa) side of Waikiki will likely be the best option. For anyone desiring to be in a little closer to most of the restaurants, shopping, and the hotel zone, going deeper into Waikiki will be a better option. One thing to consider when choosing a condo in Waikiki is the street noise. Some street-facing condos can get fairly loud during the day when traffic is heaviest.

It really takes area knowledge and knowledge of specific buildings to know which may or may not be a good fit. Since everyone is different, what is ideal for one person may not be for another.
