Oahu’s Best! – Kaneohe Bay Sandbar

Have you been to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar on the windward side of Oahu yet? It is AMAZING!!!

The Kaneohe Sandbar is one of Oahu’s hidden treasures. It’s widely talked about and photographed. As known as it is, however, it is not something that everyone gets to experience. The area is primarily only accessible by a boat or kayaks. If you do get a chance to visit, it’s a MUST GO!

Kaneohe Sandbar Location

The sandbar is located in Kaneohe Bay, close to Kaneohe and Kailua on the windward side of Oahu. With the ocean on one side, and the Koʻolau Mountain Range as the backdrop, the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is a little piece of paradise in the ocean.

Getting There…

The majority of people who visit the Kaneohe Sandbar come by boats. Kayaking over, or using a jet ski, is also an option. Kaneohe water adventure companies arrange some of the tours, but for the most part, people come over on their own.

The other option is to rent a boat from the Marine Corps Community Services Hawaii at the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe. The only caveat to that is that only people with a military ID and their guests are allowed in. A boat license is also required to rent a boat.

Getting to the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is not the easiest of Oahu adventures, and a reason why many people know about it, but have never visited. For people who manage to secure a boat, the sandbar offers one of the best experiences on Oahu.

Timing is Everything

Heading out to the Kaneohe Sandbar takes a little bit of research into tides. Since the location is literally in the middle of the ocean, tides affect the depth of the water covering the sand. Going out at low tide will add to the enjoyment. The sand is not always exposed, but when it is, it makes for a fun beach. Other times, the water will be really shallow, perfect for setting up chairs and relaxing in the sun.

Water in Hawaii is warm, but when it’s only a few inches deep it warms up even more. That’s another reason to love the sandbar—it’s like swimming in bath water.

Paradise Calling!

Living on Oahu comes with many perks. Warm weather, beautiful sandy beaches, breathtaking hikes, and amazing scenery. Oahu has many offering from city living in Honolulu, to country living on the North Shore. Whatever the preference, Oahu has it. What it also has, is this beautiful sandbar that is a short drive away from any part of the island. It’s a must-see and a must experience! It’s fun, relaxing, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Relaxation At Its Finest!

Bring chairs, paddle boards, food, drinks, and a lot of sunscreen. Sit back and enjoy the day! The water at the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is calm, and it’s perfect for all types of water activities, or simply for just floating around. At times when the sand is exposed, and the sandbar becomes a beach, it makes for a great place for a game of beach volleyball, a picnic spot, or a unique place for a beach walk. No matter what the activity, simply taking a few hours to enjoy nature will make for a fabulous time.

Nature At Its Best!

Chances are when you visit the Kaneohe Sandbar, you will not be alone. A Hawaiian honu (turtle) might swim by at any time. These gentle creatures are beautiful to observe and admire. Sea turtles are protected in Hawaii, and if they swim up, visitors are advised to let them pass, and not to touch or harass them. They sure are cute!

When venturing into deeper waters outside of the sandbar, be aware that the areas around the Marine Base are also the known for being a breeding ground for hammerhead sharks. This sounds scarier than it really is, but being informed is always a good thing.

Hi Kinga,

It is wonderful of your article and the sandbar is very attractive for me, but I wonder if I can reach there by own, but we don’t have any license of boat and kayaking… really want to go, could you please kindly provide some suggestion about how to get there?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to receiving your reply.

Aloha Phoebe. I totally understand your concern. The Sandbar is not an easy place to get to without a boat. I am not sure which company does tours to the sandbar, but I have seen tour boats there in the past. I would recommend doing a google search for “Kaneohe Bay Sandbar tours”, “Kaneohe Bay Sandbar kayak rentals”, etc, and see which companies offer and option that may work for you. There are not many options for getting there, but when you find one, I know that you will love the experience. When you do make it out there, please leave me a comment here and let me know how it went. 🙂 Kinga
