Honolulu, Hawaii has a city population of roughly 400,000 people, with Honolulu county as a whole totaling around 900,000. Honolulu is the largest city in the Hawaii Islands chain. It is a vibrant city, with almost all the mainland amenities and perks. I say almost because occasionally there are a few things that can’t get shipped to Hawaii. Oh well, we don’t need those things anyway. We have eternal sunshine.

If you are considering a move to Honolulu Hawaii, here are a few amazing things to know about this city:

When you step outside, whether it is during the day or at night, it will most likely be warm. If that’s not enough to get you to move to Honolulu, just keep on reading.

The People of Oahu

The people of Hawaii are welcoming and genuine. There are enough hugs and Aloha spirit to go around for everyone. Aside from the weather, the people are why so many people move to Honolulu and love living in Hawaii. It’s not due to “vacation mode,” as many people in Honolulu lead regular lives, go to work, walk their dogs, and drop off kids at school. They experience stress just as other people do. However, no matter what, people of Honolulu remain friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Happy people attract other happy people, and that makes living in Honolulu so wonderful. It’s not only paradise from a visual perspective but also from a human perspective.

Honolulu Outdoor Activities

Hawaii often finds itself at the top of various healthiest states in America lists. It’s not surprising given the beautiful weather, easy access to the ocean, and many hiking trails around the islands. People of Hawaii truly love spending time outdoors.

Ocean water temperatures around the state of Hawaii average 82° in the summer and 77° in the winter. That’s a lot warmer than the ocean waters along the US west coast, including Southern California. That alone should make you want to move to Honolulu quicker– the ocean is perfect! Surfing, swimming, paddle boarding, scuba diving, boating, and kite surfing in Kailua, are all popular Oahu sports. There is never a shortage of outdoor water fun that can be enjoyed on any day of the year.

Sailing is also a popular pastime in Honolulu. Every Friday, boats sail out of the Ala Wai Boat Harbor for fun races in the waters in front of Waikiki. Waikiki Yacht Club, and the Hawaii Yacht Club are both located in the harbor for many boating enthusiasts to enjoy.

For land lovers, Oahu offers miles and miles of hiking trails. The Manoa Falls hike is an easy one to start off with, and it is right in Honolulu. People with disabilities who cannot hike, but use mobility scooters or wheelchairs, can also enjoy the outdoors by visiting many of the Honolulu parks, the beach at places with access, and explore Honolulu neighborhoods and other spots on Oahu.

Moana Falls Trail

Outdoor yoga and exercise boot camps are huge in Honolulu. If you love to spend time outdoors and also love to exercise, you will really enjoy morning classes by the ocean. Relax and get stronger, all the while enjoying a light breeze and beautiful ocean views.

Okay, so maybe yoga isn’t your thing. How about an outdoor Hula class in the park, or a Biki Bike ride around town? The list goes on and on with all the fun outdoor activities that are available for everyone.

Being able to stay active, doing your favorite activities year round, is another good reason for moving to Honolulu.

Honolulu Air Quality

The Quality Index designates air quality as  “Good” when the air pollution particles are anywhere from 0-50. Honolulu’s air quality is often a 3 on the index. In comparison, some of the US cities, have the index at over 100, and in some cases even over 150, which can be unhealthy for certain groups of people. If moving to Honolulu wasn’t top of mind before, then clean air may be a good reason to start considering Honolulu as your new home. Your lungs will love you for giving them a breath of fresh air, and your eyes will thank you for the beautiful scenery that Hawaii has to offer.

Honolulu Has Amazing Homes and Condos

The Honolulu real estate market is very diverse, with options that range from new condos in Kakaako, beach living in Waikiki, wwaterfront homes in Hawaii Kai, to luxury states in Kahala. Prices compared to many areas in the continental US, will generally be higher, and that should be no surprise to anyone. Oahu is, after all, an island, and space is limited since demand is high.

Waihonua and Hokua condos

Homes located on any of the ridges, like the popular Hawaii Loa Ridge, are not only centrally located and close to many of the Honolulu amenities, but also have beautiful ocean views. In fact, many of the homes and condos in Honolulu have amazing views. We’re surrounded by blue water that goes on as far as the eyes can see. It’s a mesmerizing sight that attracts thousands of tourists to the islands annually. Living in Honolulu, one becomes accustomed to seeing the ocean everywhere, yet it also never gets old. It’s a refreshing sight and a reminder of the paradise that many call home.

Honolulu City Lifestyle

Year round active lifestyle and indoor/outdoor living may sound like only a dream, but it’s reality for people living in Honolulu. Early birds enjoy jogs in the park, paddle boarding and swimming in Ala Moana Beach Park, or kayaking in Hawaii Kai.  For those, who opt for morning coffee instead, there are numerous coffee shops with outdoor seating areas that can be enjoyed any time of the year. Or better yet, enjoy a quiet breakfast on your own lanai. Enjoying the outdoors is not hard in Honolulu. The weather and the warm ocean are ideal for indoor/outdoor living any time of the year.

Ala Moana Beach Park

When many people think of Hawaii, they envision gold sand beaches, ocean waves, and Mai Tai cocktails. While all that is 100% accurate, daily city living will likely include some form of work for most. When researching a move to Honolulu, check out the private and public schools, traffic, pet travel rules, and potential employers. While work/school may get in the way of some beach time, spending valuable Ohana time is still a high priority for the people of Hawaii. Honolulu is alive with morning, evening, and weekend activities, where people enjoy the beach, BBQs, hiking, and social events.

Residents of Honolulu also often find themselves doing many tourist activities when friends and family come to visit. This is not only fun, but it’s also super relaxing. Playing tourist on Oahu not only creates memories, but it’s also a welcome distraction from the routine of a regular week.

Living in Honolulu is truly amazing. Being able to combine the benefits of city living with a beachy year-round lifestyle is a rare find.

Honolulu Shopping

Honolulu shopping does not consist of only beach sarongs and seashell jewelry. Honolulu is actually a big shopping destination with many of the mainland stores people have grown to love. The fact that many tourists love to shop, is also a win-win for residents, as the shopping options for Oahu residents have continuously been growing over the years. Ala Moana Center is the largest of the Oahu malls, offering a three story outdoor shopping experience unlike anything found in most places. The stores and restaurants, of course, are still aair-conditioned so you can shop and dine in total comfort.

The newly redesigned International Market Place is Waikiki providing another beautiful shopping experience. With approximately 75 retailers and many new restaurants, the new International Market Place is a popular detestation for tourists and residents.

The Royal Hawaiian Center, Kahala Mall, and many other retail stores around Honolulu offer what is already available anywhere in the US and Canada. Some people choose to shop online, and while some stores do not ship to Hawaii or Alaska, many retailers offer free shipping and returns.

Shopaholics rejoice! When you move to Honolulu, your love of shopping can continue with plenty of shopping options to choose from.

Honolulu Restaurants

There are hundreds of restaurants in Honolulu to choose from. Steakhouses, sushi, American, Japanese, seafood, Mexican, you name it. From little sandwich shops in Downtown Honolulu, to famous restaurants in Kakaako, residents of Honolulu don’t ever have a shortage of choices when it comes to dining. Honolulu is a tourist destination, with people visiting from all over the world. Restaurants cater to not only local residents, but to people who visit, and all of their various dining preferences. This, in turn, makes for a very diverse restaurant environment. For anyone who enjoys good food or the ambiance of an oceanfront restaurant,  Honolulu is the tropical place to enjoy these things at. Every single day could be a different cuisine day!

Live Your Dream in Honolulu

Dreams are only dreams until you make them a reality. At some point, everyone who has moved to Honolulu has had to make a decision to leave their old life behind to start a new one in Hawaii. It’s not always an easy transition, and it can be a costly one. However, as humans, we only have so many years to live on this earth. It’s entirely up to us what we make of this life, and the choices we make. If moving to Honolulu is an item on the bucket list, maybe it’s time to take the next step? Making the decision to actually move is the hardest part, then all the pieces will start falling into place as action items are checked off the moving list.

Row of Flip Flops

Living in Hawaii is like living in paradise on earth. Ladies trade coats and scarves for summer dresses. Men trade suits for aloha shirts. Relax, plan and make it happen! After all, over 900,000 residents live on Oahu. Honolulu is a city with businesses, hospitals, hotels, banks, etc. It is far away from the mainland, but it doesn’t function on coconuts alone. Honolulu is a modern city with amenities identical or similar to the ones on the mainland.

Figuring out the job situation, as most people do work, should be a priority. Just moving without a plan is likely not the best strategy. However, with a lot of planning and realistic expectations, a relocation move to Honolulu is completely attainable. If living in paradise is your dream, it can also become your reality.

Honolulu – Urban Paradise on Earth

Honolulu is often referred to as urban paradise on earth. Urban living, with ocean view real estate, amazing pools, spectacular beaches, clean air, world class shopping, restaurants, and perfect weather, are all combined into one place. For anyone who enjoys city living, but also enjoys nature, and all that Oahu, Hawaii has to offer, then Honolulu is the place to be. It’s the best of both worlds and a place that many call home. Will it be your home too?
