Kapolei, Oahu’s “Second City” | Homes and the West Side Lifestyle

Kapolei, sometimes referred to as the “Second City,” is located on the west side of Oahu. Kapolei has become popular in recent years with the addition of homes, businesses, and amenities to the area. Oahu residents and people moving to the island are drawn to the communities for their laid-back lifestyle, access to amenities, businesses, military bases, and schools. In comparison to Honolulu real estate, many Kapolei homes are more affordable. Residents enjoy spacious private yards, community pools, and ocean views.

Kapolei Residential Areas

The community is best described when it’s broken up into three separate parts. While the city address is Kapolei for all three, the three parts are unique. The majority of the city is located on a level area Makai (ocean side) of the highway. Central Kapolei is where the majority of the businesses, stores, schools, and amenities are located. Makakilo encompasses homes located on the Mauka (mountain) side of the highway. Ko Olina is a resort area on the west side of Kapolei, where the famous Ko Olina lagoons are, where large hotels line the beachfront including Disney’s Aulani, and the location of the Ko Olina Golf Course. Ko Olina is also home to residents who enjoy golf course living and a resort style lifestyle.

Kapolei is located adjacent to the popular Ewa Beach home community, where many new and newer homes are also located.

While many Kapolei homes are built on the Ewa plains, Makakilo homes are built on the hillside. The ocean views span from Ewa Beach to Ko Olina. The drive up the hill may take an extra few minutes, but the views will make up for it.

The entire area has a good balance of single family homes, townhomes, and a few low rise condos. The area is generally known for being residential with owners or long-term tenants in the residences. The Beach Villas in Ko Olina is the exemption to this.

Amenities, Businesses, Entertainment

Kapolei city is continuously growing and evolving, with more and more businesses coming to the area. Ka Makana Ali’i Mall opened in 2017 with well known stores and restaurants. Residents no longer need to drive to other areas of Oahu for their shopping needs. Kapolei is home to large grocery stores, Target, Costco, and home improvement stores. Gyms, movie theatres, recreational facilities, and many more businesses operate around the neighborhoods.  The area is sure convenient for day to day living.

Seeing how the west side of Oahu is expanding, restaurants have also moved into the area. Popular chain restaurants and small restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines are everywhere. What used to be a sleepy community is bustling with activity and is drawing more and more residents in.

Beaches

Residents who would like to enjoy a day at the beach don’t have to go far. White Plains Beach, Ko Olina Lagoons, and the Waianae Coast are only minutes away. All areas are a little different. Some offer great waves for surfing and other are perfect for keiki where the surf is minimal.

There are many great residential areas on Oahu. Depending on pricing, distance to work, type of dwelling desired, and location, there is something for everyone. Just like the climate may be a little different from area to area, so are the home opportunities. Kapolei and Ewa Beach are popular locations on the West side of Oahu. Other areas include KaneoheKailuaHawaii Kai, and Kakaako to name a few.
