Hawaii is in the heat of it! This summer my tree has produced a minimum of five perfectly ripe mangoes every morning for weeks, and I can’t get enough.
Imagine a sunny backyard. You can hear tropical birds whistling their sweet tunes to you, and smell the sea breeze as it brushes gently past your nose. Now, imagine your favorite and most exotic fruit: pitaya, lychee, lilikoi, starfruit, cherimoya, coconut, apple banana. In this yard, there is an unlimited supply, and you can wake up and walk to it with a mug of your favorite coffee or tea in hand. This is my yard in Haiku.
Now I don’t know if you want to hear this, but let me tell you about my mango tree. It produces the most delicious, sweet (but not too sweet), non-stringy, perfectly spoonable mangoes and mixed with the coconut milk we squeeze from our trees and a bit of Tahitian vanilla it makes the best “healthy” ice cream.
Hawaii has jaded me on the rest of the world, and a lot of that can be attributed to the food. Just 15 minutes from my house is a grocery called Mana that sells local fruit, veggies, meat, and fish. Just 10 minutes down the road is a gas station called Hanzawa’s that often has that avocado that you forgot to grab off your neighbors’ tree or that piece of fish that Tyler brought in from his spearfishing trip this morning.
Food in Hawaii is pure; it’s real, it’s fresh. It is healthy and oh so ono!
So book a trip, plant a tree, or give me a ring and I’ll send you a piece of my featured mango bread so that you can find out for yourself.
