Cozy Cottage with Panoramic Ocean Views in Launiupoko, Lahaina, Maui!
Life simply does not get any better than watching the sky light up from the porch of a cozy cottage with panoramic ocean views! As a 9+ year resident of the Launiupoko neighborhood in West Maui, I firmly believe we get The. Best. Sunsets. in all of Maui!
225 Wailau Place, Launiupoko, Lahaina, Maui
Actively listed for sale right now is a sweet post and pier plantation-style cottage perched at the perfect elevation to enjoy these outstanding sunsets… not to mention whales breaching in the winter months, the 4th of July fireworks in Lahaina town in the distance, and the full moon setting on the ocean in the wee hours of the morning. 225 Wailau Place is nestled right up against the West Maui mountains at the top of the Launiupoko neighborhood, so the mountain views in the opposite direction are almost as spectacular!
Cozy Cottage with Character
The cozy 2-bedroom cottage was thoughtfully constructed to place windows and glass sliding doors at ideal vantage points to maximize all mauka and makai views. It’s just under 1000 square feet of living space on the interior (that’s the allowable living area size for a secondary farm dwelling on agricultural land in Maui County) and with soaring ceilings, an open floor plan, and a 900 square foot wraparound ipe deck, the house lives so much bigger.
It’s full of character, too! The ceilings are lahala, floors are cork, countertops are parquet bamboo butcher block, and the front entry door is hand-carved teak. Plus, the window screens are airbrushed to look like tropical foliage… but you can only see it when the sun hits the outside just right! Design accents inside and out pay homage to the pair of Hawaiian nene geese who have regularly visited the property since 2010. They were the original residents, after all!
Fully Stocked Orchard
The land itself is probably my favorite part. It’s 2/3 acre fully stocked with an abundance of tropical fruits, fragrant flowers, and Hawaiian plants including papaya, apple bananas, citrus, mango, herbs, gardenia, plumeria, night-blooming jasmine, puakenikeni, and native Hawaiian sandalwood… to name just a few! There’s also plenty of room to grow (pun intended) with plans for terraced vegetable beds and expansion of the citrus orchard. A low-maintenance drip irrigation system waters the plants that need it. In a detached building with a similar red metal roof is an oversized two-car garage with an additional 300 sqft ag office. Plenty of space for a workshop, surfboard storage, and an outdoor shower to rinse off when you get back from the beach!
The Launiupoko Lifestyle
Launiupoko is one of the most conveniently located neighborhoods in West Maui. It’s just 5 minutes south of the shopping, restaurants, and harbor in historic Lahaina town and 5 minutes north of Olowalu that shelters one of the most pristine coral reefs in Hawaii. Directly at the bottom of the hill is a sweet beach park that’s popular for family parties and has an excellent surf break. Many residents motor down the hill with their surf and paddleboards strapped on to a mule golf cart. The underlying Launiupoko land is agricultural with a minimum lot size of 2 acres, so the neighborhood is low-density with a diverse mix of working orchards and farms like the Lahaina Stables. There are great walking trails throughout, so I see many of my neighbors out walking their dogs or jogging at different times of day… when I’m out doing the same thing!
Did I mention the rainbows yet? In addition to the best sunsets, we also have the best rainbows!
