If you live in Honolulu, or have visited anytime in the past, you already know the buildings. There is no official name for this city block filled with 6 luxury condo towers, although I have heard people say “Super Block” and “Luxury Row” on occasion. For the most part, people mostly know the area by the individual building names. So if you are searching Kakaako condos for sale, it’s best to familiarize yourself with each building and its exact location. Kakaako is a fairly large neighborhood in Honolulu, so let’s focus on one city block to really get to know the area better.

Location

The six Kakaako condos are situated on one big city block across from Ala Moana Beach Park along Ala Wai Blvd. Diamond Head side, along Piikoi Ave, borders Ala Moana Center. The opposite side is adjacent to the new Ward Village Master Plan with more amazing new Kakaako condos, and the mauka (mountain) side along Waimanu St has a collection of low rise warehouses and vacant lots. In time, this side may have the Oahu rail going through in addition to other new buildings. This Honolulu city block has been in the transformation stage since the ’60s when the first condo tower was built.

The location is what makes these buildings so desirable. Real estate buyers who are searching for Kakaako condos for sale pay special attention to this particular city block. Living across from the beach, next to a largest open-air mall in the US, and adjacent to the beautiful Ward Village, filled with more shopping and restaurants, is a huge benefit to residents of these towers. The Kakaako lifestyle is amazing! It’s what new buyers are attracted to as well.

1350 Ala Moana is the original of the six. Built in 1968, to this day, it is still one of the most loved condos in Kakaako because of location and unobstructed ocean and beach views from many of the units. After a long lull in construction, Nauru Tower followed in 1991 with its half cylindrical design. Honolulu residents finally had a new and unique luxury condo to live in close proximity to Waikiki, yet outside of the tourist zone. With floor to ceiling windows, Nauru Tower residents can enjoy clear views of the ocean year round. The ’90s brought another tower to the block, the Hawaiiki in 1999. Just like the two previous luxury towers, Hawaiiki incorporated an amenities deck into its design that includes a large pool, tennis courts, and outdoor eating areas. This trend of fabulous amenities only grew larger and better with the introduction of the Hokua and the Koolani in 2006, with the addition of doggy parks, putting greens, and state of the art fitness facilities. The last empty lot remained on the block for several years until the Waihonua was introduced into the mix in 2014. With its contemporary design, large lanais, and equally spectacular mauka (mountain) and makai (ocean) views, it is one of the most recognized condo buildings in Kakaako.

Kakaako Condos For Sale

Today’s Honolulu condo buyers certainly have a lot of choices when it comes to properties. With Ward Village adding new condos on a consistent basis, and with older properties getting remodeled, researching various Kakaako condos for sale will take a little time. Understanding the location, even within one neighborhood like Kakaako is important. Knowing what the buildings offer, what the parking situation is like, what is around the property, and why one may be better than that other for one’s needs, may take a little effort. The six Kakako condos that make up the corner block of Kakaako are all different. Each building has different features, condo layouts, views, and different price structures, but one thing remains consistent…Location, location, location!

The majority of the residences have full or partial ocean views. A smaller portion has mauka (mountain) or city views.

Residents of these Kakaako condos have a grocery store right across the street at Ala Moana Center, and restaurants all around. The hardest decision is really just picking one to eat at. The beach is a stone’s throw away too.

It’s no wonder that living in this city block is so popular. People look for convenience, and this block definitely offers that and more to its residents. However, the competition is heavy from the new condos going up a block over at Ward Village and the new Park Lane Ala Moana. The scale of luxury is being pushed higher and higher and is redefining luxury condo living. While the newer buildings have a more consistent look of the kitchen and bathrooms, condos in the older buildings have a little more variety because of remodeling over the years. Ko’olani kitchen and bathroom cabinets, for example, tend to be a lighter cinnamon shade throughout the building, while the Waihonua has consistent darker cappuccino look. As times go on, and owners redesign their condos, we will be seeing more changes in all of these buildings.

Two of the buildings, the Hokua and the Koolani, also offer gas cooking for anyone who prefers gas over electric cooking.

Condos range from 1-4 bedrooms. A select few are even multi-level with their own rooftop decks, while a few lower floor units have small courtyards.

Amenities

Condo amenities don’t disappoint in these six buildings. The majority of Kakaako condos for sale have the luxury features that buyers are looking for. Not every building has every feature (some do), but between all six of them they include the following:

  • Tennis courts
  • BBQ cabanas
  • Doggy parks
  • Playgrounds with play structures
  • Putting greens
  • Fitness facilities
  • Yoga studios
  • Movie theatres
  • Function rooms with kitchens

Kids and Pets

From having amazing pools and playgrounds to a community park right next to the Ko’olani, children enjoy this area just as much as adults. Growing up in Hawaii is rough, but somebody has to do it.

Pet lovers need not worry about living in Kakaako condos with pets. With the exception of 1350 Ala Moana and Nauru Tower, pets are welcome at the Hokua, Ko’olani, Waihonua, and Hawaiiki. Different restrictions apply so it’s best to check the current rules when purchasing a condo.
