Aloha dear friends,
The breathtaking waterfalls on Big Island, Hawaii are some of the world’s finest. The lush, green backdrop of the Hamakua Coast makes Big Island a popular place to explore these natural wonders. The sight, sound, and feel of waterfalls are what make them so appealing to us.
Nature such as forests, oceans, and waterfalls give off negative ions, and they are said to increase our bodies’ serotonin, which is the chemical responsible for relieving stress, depression and tuning into a natural feel-good state.
Best Big Island Waterfalls
Now, there are hundreds of waterfalls on Big Island and hidden gems you may come across on one of your hikes. Here are 3 of my favorite waterfalls on Big Island:
Hi’ilawe Waterfalls
The Hi’ilawe Waterfalls in sacred Waipio Valley was known as the” Valley of Kings” and home to two of the tallest waterfalls of Hawaii. The total height of the falls is about 1,450 feet.
The ancient legend says, once upon a time a young couple in love, Hiilawe and Kakalaoa, was hiding in this valley from god Lono, who wanted to separate them during his search for Hiilawe, his intended bride. They decided that they will stay together forever, Hiilawe turned into a giant waterfall and Kakalaoa turned into an enormous boulder next to the base of the falls. Hiilawe is forever weeping its tears on Kakalaoa.
You can see the Hi’ilawe Falls from inside the valley. A fun walk down the hill from the Waipio outlook and left at the bottom of the road. It’s one of those sights that takes your breath away. For those of you that wish to drive down the hill, make sure you have a 4×4 and aware of the road regulations.
To access the base of falls, there are many sacred sites and private property to cross, so it’s best to go with a guide who has permission and knows the way around the valley. The valley is very sacred; please enter with the utmost respect.
Rainbow Falls
The Rainbow Falls in Hilo is stunning beyond words, and its name is given from the abundant rainbows kissing the water. A short walk along the waterfall you will find the most magical, huge Banyan trees. It is so much fun to climb them.
Beyond the Banyan trees are some water pools to play in and cool down. You may want to bring a bathing suit. There is nothing better than soaking in fresh, clean water — a great way to cleanse your body and mind.
I have always felt Rainbow Falls to be super romantic.
Akaka Falls
The 422 ft tall ‘Akaka falls is 11 miles north of Hilo. Along the way, you will find a coconut stand serving fresh coconut water.
There is a $5 charge to non-residents and free to locals. This an epic walk through the verdant rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves, and draping ferns. Perfect for a photoshoot.
I highly recommend visiting the above waterfalls and may your soul be rejuvenated.

You can’t swim in or around rainbow falls, the current is very strong and I don’t think the Banyons trees should be climbed !
