The Surfrider Foundation reminds us to make better choices together: One of the worst things we can do to our planet is using one-use plastic bottles.

Junk we find in our oceans on a daily basis…

Here’s the Info

On Saturday, Oct. 27, Surfrider Foundation – Maui Chapter invites you to its 3rd Annual Ocean Guardian Awards Gala presented by the John Severson ‘Ohana. Ocean Guardians was founded as a way for Surfrider Maui to honor members of our community who go above and beyond to ensure clean, safe, and accessible oceans for current, and future generations.

This year we will celebrate Surfrider Maui’s accomplishments and honor our 2018 Ocean Guardians:

  • Zane Kekoa Schweitzer (Ocean Athlete)
  • Donna Brown (Community Member)
  • Hawaiian Paddle Sports (Business)

The event will also honor John Severson: artist, photographer, beloved father and founder of Surfer Magazine.

The event will feature live entertainment by Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominated Tavana, a silent auction, a gourmet dinner, and no-host bar. Kainoa Horcajo will serve as emcee.

For those interested in staying overnight, Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is offering Surfrider guests discounted room rates (subject to availability). Please call Andaz at (808) 573-1234 or visit AndazMaui.com and use discount code CR85917.

How can we help?  Buy local products and protect our Aina… The tap water is fine to drink in most places in Hawaii — it comes from the rainforest in the mountains. We all drank tap water when we were kids here, right?! Most condos will have a water filter on the refrigerator or one of those filtered water pitchers and reusable water bottles at your disposal. Please be aware and don’t buy packs of bottled plastic water and Gatorade at Costco… Contrary to what everyone wants you to believe, Maui does not have a plastic bottle recycling facility! Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Plastic bits look like food for turtles and fish

While you’re listening: let’s avoid plastic trash bags, plastic straws, zip-lock baggies, and plastic beach toys. All that stuff is probably already provided for you at the condo. This is our kuleana. Red my blog for more about trying to buy locally.

The first Surf magazine ever: The Surfer, created by John Severson in 1959 to publicize his surf movies…his lettering is still cool!

One more thought to leave you with: those big plastic noodles they sell at the supermarkets break off in the ocean and the turtles and fish nibble on the chunks. I won’t even mention avoiding the cheap spray sunscreen as now that junk is illegal on our island…you can buy the “All Good” sunscreen brand at Costco… please be mindful of the amount of plastic you bring into your home on Maui…Aloha, Anna.
