Buyer Tip – Shopping for a Pet-Friendly Oahu Condo

Are you a home buyer who has a furry family member, or would like the freedom to adopt one down the road? According to the Hawaiian Humane Society, more than 60% of Oahu households include pets. To many, pets are members of the family and finding a new home to accommodate them is just as important as basic criteria of location, affordability, and size.

Check on Pet Policies Before Submitting an Offer

When considering a condominium unit for purchase, have your Realtor check on the association’s policy regarding pets, or request a copy of the association’s House Rules from the building’s managing agent or resident manager. While Buyers are given an opportunity to review this information during the escrow process, why go through the trouble of submitting an offer on a property that won’t allow your pet?

Also, pet policies can be more complex than just “yes, pets allowed” or “no, pets not allowed.” Some associations:

  • Only allow certain types of pets (for example, birds only)
  • Maintain a weight limit (such as dogs up to 50 lbs.)
  • Have a number limit (up to two dogs)
  • Require the animal to be registered with the management upon moving in

Finding the Right Pet-Friendly Place is Well Worth the Effort

Finding a good home for both the furry and non-furry members of your family may require a little more planning and time. Once you find the right place, keeping the family together will be well worth the effort…just think of all the purrs and woofs of gratitude!
